Akamai announced Wednesday early results of a partnership with the Center for Internet Security and the Department of Homeland Security to offer free malicious domain blocking and reporting services to state, local, tribal and territorial governments.

After five weeks of offering the service, with just under 350 sign-ups, the MDBR service blocked roughly 10 million malicious domains. That is a big figure given how little work it is for governments to implement.

“It takes less than five minutes to point recursive DNS to us,” said Patrick Sullivan, chief technology officer.
Sullivan says the long term idea is for DHS to plug specific policies to protect state, local, tribal and territorial governments into the free service.

Cybercriminals continue to target U.S. state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) government organizations. In 2019, there were more than 100 ransomware attacks -- including an attack on Baltimore's IT systems that locked out thousands of computers and disrupted nearly every city service. This attack is estimated to have cost the city as much as $18 million.

Attackers target SLTT organizations because they know their security teams need to deal with complex networks and systems, and run numerous third-party systems and services, and that these digital transformation initiatives by state and local governments have a rich attack surface. Many SLTT cybersecurity teams are struggling with reduced security budgets and a well-documented shortage of skilled cybersecurity and networking professionals to fill open positions.

The Malicious Domain Blocking and Reporting (MDBR) service is a fully managed proactive domain security service that will be available at no cost to members of the Center for Internet Security's® (CIS®) Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center® (MS-ISAC®) and Elections Infrastructure Information Sharing and Analysis Center® (EI-ISAC®). It is being delivered via a partnership among CISA, Akamai, and CIS.
