The new lightweight and royalty-free AVIF image format is coming to web browsers. Work is almost complete on adding AVIF support to Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

The new image format is considered one of the lightest and most optimized image compression formats, and has already gained praise from companies such as Netflix, which considers it superior to existing image formats such as JPEG, PNG, and even the newer WebP.
A SHORT HISTORY OF AVIF
The acronym of AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. As its name hints, AVIF is based on AV1, which is a video codec that was developed in 2015, following a collaboration between Google, Cisco, and Xiph.org (who also worked with Mozilla). [...]

SUPPORT COMING TO BROWSERS
But AVIF is most likely to receive its biggest boost in the coming months when it will slowly make its way into web browsers. Once in web browsers, website operators will be able to rest assured that they can make the transition to the new format on live production sites, which, in turn, will skyrocket its adoption even more.

Just like it was with AV1, Firefox was the first browser to announce support for AVIF.
Currently, Mozilla is still testing AVIF inside Firefox Nightly, and official AVIF image support is expected to go live later this summer, with the release of Firefox 80, at the end of August -- unless it's delayed again.

On Chrome, this feature is also scheduled for a release this year, in Chrome 85, also expected sometime in August.
According to a Gerrit entry, Google is skipping the testing phase since it believes there's "low risk" to adding this AVIF support to the browser and will enable AVIF support by default to all users once Chrome 85 is live.

We've added support for the new AVIF image format in Image Resizing. It compresses images significantly better than older-generation formats such as WebP and JPEG. It's supported in Chrome desktop today, and support is coming to other Chromium-based browsers, as well as Firefox.

Caveats
Two biggest problems in AVIF are encoding speed and lack of progressive rendering.
AVIF images don't show anything on screen until they're fully downloaded. In contrast, a progressive JPEG can display a lower-quality approximation of the image very quickly, while it's still loading.
How and when to enable AVIF today?
We recommend AVIF for websites that need to deliver high-quality images with as little bandwidth as possible. This is important for users of slow networks and in countries where the bandwidth is expensive.
Browsers that support the AVIF format announce it by adding image/avif to their Accept request header.

Not to mention an end users receiving machines CPU/Resource. Even with so-called innovative newer generation Web Browsers on older series Windows carry a heftier load burden courtesy stuffing websites with as much GUNK as they can funnel onto them.

So improvement with the new format might or might not alleviate that growing gnawing scenario

Which browsers are capable of displaying AVIF pictures?
Google Chrome 85 (released August 25, 2020) was the first browser to support the AVIF image format by default. With a market share of about 30 Percent, worldwide AVIF support is already reality.
AVIF support can also be enabled in Mozilla Firefox since Firefox 77 (released June 2, 2020).

After setting the image.avif.enabled flag to true in about:config, Firefox is capable of displaying single AVIF files. Unfortunately, in-page support (e.g. within <img> or <picture> tags) in Firefox is not complete yet, even in Firefox 80.

All other browsers including IE, Edge, Safari or Chrome for Android DO NOT support the AVIF file format yet. Check the current browser support here: caniuse.com/avif.

Mozilla Firefox Flips On AVIF Image Decoding By Default

As noted before the holidays that Mozilla Firefox was ready to enable AVIF image decoding by default, now that the holidays have passed and developers back to their keyboards, Firefox today has re-enabled AVIF by default.

Since Google's Chrome 85 there has been AVIF support enabled by default while the Firefox support has been disabled by default for now. But as of today in their nightly code the functionality is there out-of-the-box.
The change landed just a few minutes ago for AVIF by default.

As noted here, they plan to upgrade to dav1d 0.8.1 later this month for better performance. This AVIF support should be in good standing for Firefox 87 in March barring anymore reverts.

Guess what? AVIF support is enabled by default (yes, again, for the fourth time) and looks to be the biggest feature of Firefox 92, which is expected to see the light of day next month on September 7th.

Mozilla kept delaying AVIF support by default because they wanted to implement more features like transparency and other advanced features, and it looks like Firefox 92 beta comes with support for the new AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) image format, which is based on the modern and royalty free AV1 video codec to provide users with significant bandwidth savings.

Looking in about:config at the image.avif.enabled option, we can see that it’s set to true, but, as I said before, if it doesn’t make it into the final release, you can always enable it by setting the image.avif.enabled option in about:config from false to true. Remember, AVIF support is there, it’s just not enabled by default, so fingers crossed for it to land in the final release.
