Re: AdAware 11 Beta is out

I am going to uninstall AdAware due to occasional high CPU use from AdAware's service. For example sometimes my computer is very slow to resume from sleeping due to around 50% CPU use from AdAware. Also, I will add that I have it installed in companion mode, where realtime protection is completely disabled.

Automatic program upgrades are essential these days. :) Is there still the annoying message "Ad-Aware will continue to protect your computer" from the system tray icon every reboot? :doubt:

Not that I noticed, (I've already uninstalled it) however if it does I may have missed it as I only reboot about once a month.

I cringe now at what used to be a spectacular global phenomena in Lavasoft Adaware right at the onset of our current computer revolution, and I was so proud and grateful to been a hijackthis/Adaware specialist and Moderator at their forums working with the best in the business found no where else on earth at the time.

But how how time changes things. They also say wounds heal with time but IMHO no greater disservice was ever visited on the computer public as when they let this once famous antispyware program along with it's supporters fall completely to uselessness as this one did. A rise and a fall of an Empire within a new era all at the same time.

Anything after is become not even a fraction of it's former glory. I rest my peace with it and to all the professionals that once fashioned and took pride in this once in a lifetime event.

Pretty harsh lol. It appears to do decent in tests, though not the greatest. It's no longer MBAM quality, but I think it's far from dead.

On another note, does the free version use Bitdefender now?!

Lol okay, I saw AdAware using Bitdefender, but didn't notice it was in direct response to the question of the free version using it. I love all these free AVs with Bitdefender. I may start recommending this now if the final version 11 turns out to be good.

The beta version does, but the stable version is using Vipre.

Yeah pretty sad, and it makes sense if it detected more than MBAM, since MBAM is not a full AV.

And are you positive the free version uses Vipre and not Bitdefender? Even their website makes it sound as if it does:

    http://www.lavasoft.com/products/compare.php

"Complementing its proprietary anti-spyware technolody with one of the best antivirus engines available today (Bitdefender),...This testing revealed that Ad-Aware will closely match Bitdefender's impressive test results in independant lab tests.

Their tests used the free version of AdAware, so how would it score near Bitdefender if it didn't use their engine?

Also, I'm hoping someone here will try it, and see if it truly is lighter now, plus I'd like to know if it still requires making an account or whatever.

No it does use BitDefender in the v11. v10.x was using Vipre.

Re: AdAware 11 Beta is out

I did an on demand detection test last week with about 50,000 fresh samples we collected during the day to see how Ad-Aware Free compared with MBAM Pro. Don't freak out MBAM Pro users :p It was just a quick test for fun, although the "MBAM is not an AV" thing doesn't really fly. The vast VAST majority of stuff we collect daily are trojans, backdoors, password stealers etc, not file infectors or infected legitimate files.

I might do more tests at some point but publish the MD5's/detection names etc. so you can inspect the results.

    It does.

    Really?

Since when tests "for fun" are posted with rings & bells on the front page?
