active smart how can i read them

hi
i have a new hardisk 200giga maxtor , and i installed active S.M.A.R.T
i would like to know if i can trust about this program
every day , every mintes i gives me different parameters!
like Ultra ATA CRC Error Rate Seek Time Performance Spin Up Time

where can i find info to be able to understand these parameters?
it's a good idea use this software or it's better uninstall it ?

Ive used that program and found it really annoying. Didnt like its layout and it was really buggy (on my comp atleast). I found some comment when i used it basically saying there was alot negative critique about this prog all around the net.

Well id recommend HDD Health which really does the job well and is FREE also. For those parameters you better google cause i cant really help you with all of them. But a few of them fluctuate for me all time. HDD Health got an "health" tab which gives some clues also, for example im getting some lo Ultra ATA CRC Error Rate, if i dont remember wrong the program says that could be because of faulty IDE cable.

Active S.M.A.R.T is a rip off. It is junk. I installed it right after I got this Dell 8300 two years ago. It immediately announced that my Seagate Barracuda hard drive was dying and predicted death within one week! I thought that was ridiculous and it was. The hard drive is just fine two years later. That stupid program after the week was up, predicted imminent death in two weeks... then in a month. It did everything it could to terrify me. It is junk.

HDD Health is a bit better but not much. I read up on these programs and none of them are worthy of attention and use. You'd be better off running the last free version of Everest and observing each time you run it if the values and parameters for the drive are within normal range. That is what I do. The SMART built into XP will notify you anyhow. You don't need these programs.

That prediction you are talking about is T.E.C. i guess. Well that its a prediction. Now this works with statistics, change over time. Less time run - less accuracy. Install a SMART program, say that it polls every 5 mins. Start value is 235 and next poll gives 230. Next read is 225 for example which gives a decrease of 5 for every 5 mins --> Simple math, your hdd is about to die real soon. That is what your getting. Now just run those programs a little longer and your accuracy will increase and T.E.C will increase. Maybe some attributes are regarded as more important and are given more weight in the equation.

HDD Health told me my C drive was about to give up within a day first time of installing this. Now its a year away. My other drives values dont fluctuate much and are a like 10 years away or so.

I wouldnt want to be without SMART polling (with logging) anymore since a program just like this helped me rescue 80gbs a couple of years ago. Drive worked fine for three years then T.E.C started dropping, dropping. Withing two days after backup of all data the drive died.

I rather prefer a small resident proggie over an demand one, but thats just imho

Yeah, install everest like Mele20 said if you want a program that gives you SMART values (and a bunch of other goodies), or install HDD Health for example which does the same, though this program is resident meaning that i stays active all the time polling SMART and gives you a T.E.C.

poll every 15 min and the value Ultra ATA CRC Error Rate go up and down ,and Seek Time Performance goes up and down ,but the drive is new

Yeah it should give you same values. It takes them from same hdd.

Ive disabled notificiation of attributes change. Right click on HDD Health icon/ choose options/Alert Options Tab/Untick "Enable attributes change alert". My values, specially on c goes up´n down and its just annoying having those -1/+1 alerts. Just keep that program going and check T.E.C. and like Mele20 said you can also check values and parameters and see if they are acceptable.

I use 4 Maxtor hdds.

On one of my drives ultra ata crc error goes up and down, ALOT. Maybe i should check cabling like it says if i dont remember wrong.

On the other drives these values differ (from last measurement).
* 08 Seek Time Performance
* 09 Power On Hours Count
* 0C Power Cycle Count

Just dont worry so much your drive is probably all right. If you are using HDD Health keep a look now and then on T.E.C (and attributes values). The T.E.C. value does a prediction on how long your drive has to live before it might go kaput. BUT! That changes forth and back but accuracy should increase over time. Also i read somewhere with a new drive its common some attributes use to drop first weeks but stabilize. I dont remember where i read that.

Also on all my drives my Reallocated Sector Count values are lower than your values! Actually on one drive (same as low crc error) its as low as 150, i have to keep an eye on that one.

I have 4 disks in my computer, 2 SATA and 2 IDE:
I have SpeedFan running with
HD0 UltraATA CRC Error Rate Value=200 Worst=200 Warn 0 Raw 000000000000
HD1 Ditto
HD2 Ditto
HD3 Ditto

So, there is no change and they are about 8-9 months after purchase for the SATA and about 14 months after purchase for the IDE.
