I have a product key for Win 8 Pro and an iso image. Can I use this to install in a VM, test it out, and then use it for my new pc? Or will it fail to activate the 2nd time? I'm not planning to run both at the same time of course.

The installer asks for the key as the 1st step (I'm trying this now in VirtualBox). Won't it automatically activate?

I'm not sure how this is with win8, but with win7 you can install it, click activate later when the activation screen comes up and use it for 30 days before it will start nagging you about activation.

I don't know if 8 is the same as 7, but with 7, you could activate it maybe a half dozen times before it started to fail. And even so, a quick phone call would get you an activation code from MS, they're very good about that, and it's easy to do. So not too much to worry about.
