    Hi,

    I use Macrium Reflect Free.

Whenever I try to create an image it says, 'Failed to create Volume Snapshot for drive C. Result Code: 0x80042318. Using pssnap instead.'

    But creates the image anyways.

The first time I saw that happening I checked the service volume shadow copy and it was stopped and set to start manually. So I started it and set it to automatically.

Then checked it after few days. The service was running and automatically started. I tried to create an image with macrium. But that same thing happened again.

Then I waited another couple of days. But to no avail.

So I changed the service settings to the same as it was before.

What should I do? I mean the image still works but I think macrium uses an alternative way of creating it. So is it okay?

    Best Regards,
    ams963

This normally happens when you have two conflicting imaging software installed on your system. Make sure you have only Macrium installed and all other imaging utilities are properly uninstalled.

Was any Acronis product ever installed on your system at one point?

Seems rather a VSS issue. I would try to look for "fix VSS Windows" in google to find a way to repair this. Or also Tweaking.com "windows repair" module in custom mode *only* and chosing fix VSS service.

Just a question : did you by chance install shadow protect and then removed it ? It messed up VSS on a Vista machine and I had to reinstall it to get it working again !

    Sorry !

And what about shadow protect ?

Did it worked once (VSS & Macrium I mean) ?

If yes, can you recall the changes made on your PC since then ?

Also, did you read the direction on how to troubleshoot VSS on @philby post ?

the only ones I've used are easeus todo bakcup, keriver 1 click restore and macrium reflect...all free....all showed the same thing...vloume shadow service is not supported .......

    never.......

yeah and there it says, "If you find any messages then these with give you an ‘Event ID’ and sometimes a ‘Result Code’ or 'hr'. These two pieces of information can generally pin point the cause of your VSS failure. Try Googling the Event ID(s) and Result Code(s) for more information."

    And I've found this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907574
there the symptoms listed are exactly mine....but the resolution given involves registry editor...so a little afraid....also don't understand step number 3 of that resolution....how do I 'verify whether the Location registry entry exists.' ?........

You can always perform image backup using Drive Snapshot, or R-Drive Image, they don't use VSS (they can use their own snapshot mechanism).

That's the way to go. To check a registry entry, just try to go there, if you can't, it's probably not existent. But perform a registry and/or image backup or your system before...

    I still don't understand....

okay...um....I've followed up to the step "3. Click the registry subkey for each program that is listed under the Catalogs registry subkey." I've attached an image.....but then what....I'm stuck in the latter part of step 3?.... "For each registry subkey, verify whether the Location registry entry exists."

I don't want to do off topic, but I wasn't aware the R-Drive didn't use VSS...I know they have an older driver they use but I thought it did use VSS for newer systems? Not sure if you are talking about manually telling it to not use VSS? Thanks!

At one point you can select VSS or not in the wizard. You uncheck VSS and keep R-TT VSS checked. I guess that does it.

could you maximize the "Name" column. There you have a list of path(es), says C:\. This one exists (I guess) on your HDD. Check for the others in the list. That's what I would do.

Could you also try to install SystemExplorer (www.systemexplorer.net) and run it, display the service tab or menu item, look for Volume Shadow Copy Service, try to start it then to stop it. If it starts ok, that's a good point. If not, it might help fix it knowing the service won't start.

Hello again - maybe running chkdsk C: /r from an elevated command prompt might be worth a shot?

Incidentally - I don't know what you're supposed to do with that registry key either. Under ContentIndex on W7, all I have is a Languages sub-key...
