"PC and component manufacturer MSI is warning users that malicious actors are leveraging its name to distribute malware. The attackers have created a fake download page for MSI's Afterburner software, and they're using an URL that's made to look official to an unsuspecting user..." https://www.neowin.net/news/a-fake-...&utm_campaign=Feed: neowin-main (Neowin News)
Oh wow. And the Afterburner app had to undergo some revisions that removed some flags due to escalating China/Taiwan tensions, it seems (according to the Afterburner dev who said there's a new build coming out any time now. Bad timing, it seems). Source I looked on the Guru of 3D forums for any additional word on this as the MSI Afterburner developer runs it and no word on this malware issue at this moment. Wow, maybe someone should clue them in if they haven't done so by now. I only get Afterburner/RivaTuner SS from the Guru3D site. The URL is currently NOT flagged on a certain virus-checking site. Hmm.
I must admit that these attacks are quite clever because they can fool anyone! This is exactly why I don't rely only on my AV. You always need to have a second line of defense. Looks pretty cool, do you get this software on all AMD based systems, or do you need to download it?
OK I see. I have to admit, eventhough I'm hearing positive things about AMD CPU's, I think I would still prefer Intel.
No this is AMD gpu... Cmon man read And yes intel i5 11400F is insane right now, the new amd ryzens are super overpriced
I forgot that on desktops you can still combine Intel CPU's with AMD GPU's, but on laptops you can't. Also, aren't AMD CPU's cheaper, because I noticed that laptops with Intel's 11th Gen CPU's are more expensive.
Well depends on the country you live. But no, globally the new ryzen 5K series are way more expensive than the intel 11th gen series. So for example, for netherlands - https://nl.pcpartpicker.com/ You can buy i5-11400F (f means no integrated gpu which doesn't matter, it is otherwise 1:1 with the non-f version, only that the non-f version has an integrated gpu and is usually slightly more expensive) for 192.95 euro. Meanwhile the cheapest ryzen 5K series is the 5600X starting from 300 euro. That's a 55.5% increase in price. ANd yes the 5600x is slightly better than the 11400F, but not 55% better. https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/intel_core_i5_11400f_processor_review,12.html Oh yes I don't deal with laptops, so idk about that. I only care about pcs.
OK then this probably explains it, seems like on laptops the new AMD Ryzen are cheaper, but perhaps not on desktops. I'm guessing that AMD wants to gain a foothold in the laptop market. For example, the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 with AMD Ryzen 5 costs about 630 euro, but with the Intel iCore 5 11th Gen it costs about 700 to 750 euro.
...and again. Fake afterburner download promoted by Google, leads to an infostealer. https://twitter.com/apivoid/status/1594365925876125696 (you don't need to be a twitter user to see this warning)
Wow, how come Google doesn't notice this stuff? Now that I think of it, I almost never get see ads on Google anymore, I guess uBlock is doing a pretty good job.
Wow @stapp Good and timely heads up caution. Excellent of you and nice pickup on it. Seems like those sneaks choose some clever means that would easily be overlooked by most.
