What you do online is also susceptible to attackers who aim to hack into your applications, social media accounts, and, in some cases, seek to collect financial information. All of us are vulnerable when we connect to the internet, but some technology products are more prone to invasion.

To determine which products are most susceptible to bad actors, we used recent data from the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s National Vulnerability Database, which updates frequently. Our findings outline the type of vulnerabilities that users should be privy to and indicate the severity of attacks.

Only 894 technical vulnerabilities were reported in 1999; 20 years later, that figure had increased nearly 14 times to 12,174. However, 2018 showed the highest number of vulnerabilities: 16,556. Debian GNU/Linux, a free operating system (OS), experienced 1,197 of those vulnerabilities, making it the most susceptible product in 2018.

Access Granted
Code execution, which allows an attacker to execute arbitrary commands, was responsible for more than 1 in 4 technical vulnerabilities in 2019, followed by cross-site scripting (17.7%). Code execution was also the most common type of vulnerability in 2018 and accounted for 3,041 security holes.

Since 2009, Microsoft has had 6,814 technical vulnerabilities, making it the most vulnerable vendor in those 20 years.

Trouble With Your Operating System?
Although our analysis shows Debian Linux may be the most troubled operating system, Android reported 54 more vulnerabilities than Debian Linux in 2019.

Android reportedly had the most vulnerabilities of any OS in 2019 and that’s fine

Android is generally considered a fairly secure operating system, but it seems vulnerabilities of varying sizes crop up all too often. Now, a report is claiming that Android had the most security vulnerabilities of any OS in 2019 but that’s totally fine.

What’s notable for Android, too, is that these numbers are actually going down. In 2017, for example, a whopping 843 vulnerabilities were discovered and 525 the year before.
Over its lifetime, 2,563 vulnerabilities have been discovered in Android.
In a statement to Fast Company, a spokesperson from Google for Android said regarding this report, emphasis our own:

"We’re committed to transparency and release public security bulletins monthly on issues that have been fixed in Android to harden the security of the ecosystem. We disagree with the notion that measuring the number of security issues fixed in an OS is any indication of the security of the platform. This is actually a result of the openness of the Android ecosystem working as intended."
Realistically, this number shouldn’t scare users all that much.
