And the line between Facebook and Instagram continues to blur

When Instagram first launched a decade ago, it was nothing like Facebook. The app, which began as a Foursquare-like check-in network, had one purpose: to make photo sharing easy (and make those pictures prettier in the process).
It’s easy to forget now, but that was a relatively novel concept in 2010.

Then came Instagram, which made boring photos seem interesting, beautiful and easy to share. Thanks to early hype and a well-connected founder, it was an overnight success. It racked up 100,000 users in its first week, and millions more soon followed.

The rest is well-documented: Mark Zuckerberg, always attuned to potential threats, scooped up the app in 2012, just as Instagram was closing in on 80 million users. The billion-dollar price tag raised some eyebrows (the app had exactly zero revenue at the time).

Fast forward to today and Instagram might just be the most important part of the Facebook family.
But as Instagram began to grow bigger and bigger, Facebook’s influence became more powerful. Clashes with Zuckerberg, who was reportedly jealous of Instagram’s success, drove out Instagram’s founders in 2018.

Today, Instagram is almost unrecognizable from the simple photo sharing app it once was. The feed is still there, but now there’s also Stories, and Direct, and Shopping, and Reels, and IGTV.

At the same time Facebook is encouraging account linking, cross-posting and messaging between the two apps. Instagram may still be its own service, but the once clear lines separating it from Facebook are starting to get very, very blurry.

Instagram’s 10th birthday release introduces a Stories Map, custom icons and more

Instagram today is celebrating its 10th birthday with the launch of several new features, including a private “Stories Map,” offering a retrospective of the Stories you’ve shared over the last three years, a pair of well-being updates, and the previously announced IGTV Shopping update. There’s even a selection of custom app icons for those who have recently been inspired to redesign their home screen, as is the new trend.

Two other new features also rolling out with the latest release are timed alongside the kickoff of National Bullying Prevention Month. The first, which will begin as a test, will automatically hide comments similar to others that have already been reported.
This feature is somewhat similar to Twitter’s “Hide Replies” feature that launched globally last year.

Instagram says it’s also expanding its nudge warnings feature to include an additional warning when people repeatedly try to post offensive remarks.

The company also released new data about trends across its platform as well as an editorial look back at Instagram’s major milestones.

Today is Instagram’s 10th birthday. Reporters received an email with some celebratory statistics: There are 900 million daily emoji reactions on Instagram, and 50% of users watch a video each day.

But two numbers were conspicuously absent from the report. How many users does Instagram have? And how much revenue does it bring in for parent Facebook Inc.? When I asked, Instagram declined to comment.

Facebook hasn’t disclosed how many people use Instagram since 2018, six years after it bought the app, when the founders were still there and argued with CEO Mark Zuckerberg that 1 billion users was enough of a milestone to talk about.
Facebook has never posted Instagram’s unique revenue [...]

Now, though, Facebook wants to erase any distinction between the apps in the minds of regulators.
If regulators really are trying to understand the impact of one company—majority controlled by one man—owning two of the world’s most powerful social networks, they should get the numbers.

Seriously, Zuckerberg is an idiot. I find myself spending less and less time on Instagram because of the horrible design of "Instagram Stories", I don't bother to watch most of the videos anymore.
