The article shared by stapp contains a link to a GitHub page that describes the exploit in Turkish.

If I understand the Google translation correctly, the error is specifically for 7-zip and (how it handles) it’s help file?

I guess it's safe to open 7-zip.chm on Linux with xCHM?
Just did that and nothing strange happened.
There isn't anyone here to exploit it locally in the first place. :D

Thanks for the suggestion. I think ultimately my bigger concern is will chm files still work after the death of IE... for multiple reasons.

Does the Windows version of xCHM (outdated...) need Internet Explorer to be present?

not the IE, IE is just a gui, but its engine (trident) to show the html content (i wrote before).

thats also a reason why help files are linked to websites or as html files in installation folder, or pdf. msedge is compatible to this. unfortunately, chm is supported until the bitter end, i guess.

What engine is used on Linux to display these files in the program I mentioned (xCHM)?

I'm very dubious about this exploit which is NOT exploitable remotely but ONLY locally:

    https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2022-29072

However it would be good practice to put 7-zip, like other softwares with similar function, in the anti-exploit list because in the history they have been vulnerable to remote exploits:

    https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-9220/7-zip.html

Personally I always put the software that handles zip-files even in my ex-pc Windows XP in anti-exploit list.
In the example above Bandizip in MBAE.

    It depends on the anti-exploit.
    In WD:

Isn’t the anti-exploit in Windows independent from WD?

Likewise and thanks for the update notice. 7-Zip is as natural on my systems as Explorer is to Windows.

does it work well with the Windows 11 new context menu and the old classic menu for those who have used the tweak to revert back to the full context menu in Windows 11?

Support for the ARM64 filter when compressing ARM64 executable files to 7z or xz archives is now available in the new 23.00 beta version. Plus the release improves the compressing of executable files, the creation of multivolume archives on macOS and Linux, and more.
