Keppel Corp-owned telco M1 has launched its 5G non-standalone network, which means its customers can access it if they simply add on a 5G Booster pack to their existing mobile plan.

The latest move makes M1 the third mobile network operator to offer non-standalone 5G in Singapore, after StarHub in mid-August and Singtel earlier this month.
Customers with compatible devices can connect to the M1 5G network in the central business district, Orchard Road, Suntec City and Marina Bay regions from Friday (Sept 25).

The price tag for non-standalone 5G connectivity ranges from $15 for 25GB to $40 for 100GB, with an early-bird discount of 70 per cent for sign-ups by year-end.

At a post that is still yet to be published to Telstra Exchange at the time this article was published on iTWire, Telstra has announced a proper 5G Home Internet service at last, similar to the Optus 5G offering, but in a targeted way, or at least initially.

According to Supratim Adhikari, who was obviously given prior access to this news as he published an article this morning at 12.00am at the SMH entitled "Telstra lays down 5G gauntlet for NBN Co with fixed wireless product", there are billions of dollars of future payments at stake, with Telstra already having earned $8.9 billion from 2012 to 2020 in "one off payments" from NBN Co when customers move from a Telstra connection to an NBN connection.

However it's not just a new 5G Home Internet service that Telstra is promising, but speed improvement options to some of its existing NBN plans, too - although FTTN customers are likely to miss out. Although Telenor has partnered with Ericsson to deliver its national 5G radio network in Norway, the Norwegian state telco will continue to use Huawei to maintain its 4G radio network as well as upgrade 5G coverage in some geographic locations across the country.

“Telenor has used Huawei as a supplier to our networks in Norway since 2009, and our experience with working with them has been positive,” said Anders Krokan, vice-president of communications at Telenor Norway. “Huawei has delivered on the strict security and quality requirements we have for our suppliers. The Czech Republic’s communications regulator announced seven companies applied to take part in the country’s 5G spectrum auction, which will progress as planned after legal bids to hold the sale were dismissed.

Following the release of the auction terms in August, Reuters reported all three of the country’s operators filed legal action against some of the CTO’s conditions.
However, in its statement announcing the bidders the CTO noted “measures filed with the court in order to stop the selection process have already been rejected”.

The date for the start of the auction is yet to be publicly disclosed.

The company has invested €4bn in the network expansion, which will be complete by 2022, and the switch-on comes only about a year and a half after its success in the frequency auction. This compares with four years for 3G and two years for 4G, and with a larger scale for 5G.
O2’s 5G network will start with about 150 stations in Germany’s five largest cities, which means nine million people will be able to experience 5G from O2 in their city.

On Monday Optus announced it is now offering 5G service to its wholesale partners, or Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs).
This means that if you ever sign up for a plan from an MVNO it is always being powered by either Telstra, Optus or Vodafone.

The U.S. carrier has lagged behind the competition in 5G coverage due to them using a millimeter-wave (mmWave) 5G network, which is difficult to erect and offers short-range coverage. When it does work, however, it offers blazingly fast speeds. Does it matter how fast your 5G Ultra Wideband network is if no one is ever on it? No. Do we still like looking at things like a 5Gbps speedtest result and think, “Bro, I need this.” Unfortunately, yes. Verizon and its partners claim to have done that this week in a lab setting.

In partnership with Qualcomm and Ericsson, while using 5G mmW spectrum combined with 4G LTE, Verizon says it topped the 5Gbps mark. To do so, they used Qualcomm’s X60 5G modem, which we can assume will be in the Snapdragon 875 chip that will power all of the 2021 flagship phones. It’s rated as being able to push up to 7.5Gbps download speeds.
Again, this was a test environment that was built to show that Verizon’s 5G mmW network can reach incredibly wild theoretic speeds.

The FCC will use a two-phase, multi-round reverse auctions to hand out the money in two phases for the Rural 5G Fund. It will also use the improved maps on where broadband is and isn't based on its new Digital Opportunity Data Collection.
The FCC also said the money would not be used to overbuild the 90% of the country where T-Mobile has pledged to build out broadband to rural areas, a commitment that was part of the FCC's agreement to allow the merger with Sprint.
