"Our 5G network already covers around one-third of the population," Penn said.
"Telstra's 5G is already rolling out in 53 cities and regional towns across Australia and more than 10 million Australians now live, work or pass through our 5G network footprint every day."

Penn also responded to criticism over the telco's latest plan structure, in which Telstra dropped its 5G fee, but bumped up the price of its base plans by at least AU$5 a month.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 was the first SoC in the new lineup, featuring the latest ARM Cortex-A77 cores, Mali-G77 GPU, and 5G modem. However, so far, devices with the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 have curiously been restricted to China, but that could change soon.
The company went on to launch a few more chipsets under the new brand, including the mid-range Dimensity 800, Dimensity 820, Dimensity 1000+, and Dimensity 720, which was unveiled just last week.

As impressive as these chipsets might sound on paper, we have yet to see a device with a Dimensity chipset launch internationally. Every single smartphone that launched with the MediaTek Dimensity SoC so far has been limited to the Chinese market only. But that might soon change as the company has now officially confirmed its plans to bring the Dimensity chipsets to more markets outside China.

Verizon is expanding its 5G service, at least for those who are traveling internationally. On Monday the wireless giant announced that it has reached a deal with South Korean wireless provider LG U Plus to allow for those visiting South Korea to be able to take advantage of 5G abroad.

Verizon says that those traveling will be able to use South Korea's 3.5 GHz midband 5G network, which in its tests the US carrier says it was able to get average download speeds of 252 Mbps and upload speeds of 119 Mbps.
Verizon says a "compatible device" is required, though it is unclear if the carrier's current 5G portfolio will be able to take advantage of international roaming or if users will need a newer 5G device.

Users will also need to have a compatible Verizon 5G unlimited plan at home to be able to take advantage of 5G abroad.

Anti-5G activists have been keeping a constant vigil outside a mobile phone tower in northern NSW as they seek to stop Telstra upgrading it with new technology.

Mullumbimby has a well-known reputation for alternative views, particularly in relation to anti-vaccination sentiment.

But locals have a new fear: radiation from 5G mobile technology, which the chief health officer has declared there is “no evidence” causes adverse health impacts.

Protesters say they — and anyone else who isn’t currently working to stop 5G technology rolling out — don’t understand it. They worry they’re being treated as guinea pigs.

“They‘re just using us to see if it’s going to be OK, and if we die, well, we’ve got so many of us,” one protester who spoke to Four Corners said.

Australia’s Communications and Cyber Safety Minister Paul Fletcher says it would be “naive” to assume hostile foreign countries were not involved in spreading misinformation about 5G.

It comes as several anti-5G, anti-coronavirus, anti-lockdown and anti-mask protests have taken place around Australia in recent months, with local conspiracy groups gaining tens of thousands of members online.

Ofcom has rejected calls by some operators for the upcoming auction of 5G spectrum to be abandoned in favour of an allocation process and will invite bids for the airwaves in January 2021.

The auction will see 80MHz worth of 700MHz spectrum and 120MHz of 3.6-3.8GHz frequencies made available for 5G networks. This amounts to an 18 per cent increase in the amount of spectrum available to operators

T-Mobile's nationwide 5G network is getting a boost. On Tuesday, the self-proclaimed "un-carrier" announced that it has turned on a new version of its 5G network that should allow for better coverage and lower latency.

Known as Standalone 5G (or SA 5G), this version of 5G does not need to be anchored to any existing 4G LTE service, enabling T-Mobile to offer better coverage and performance compared to its current 5G offering. Karri Kuoppamaki, T-Mobile's vice president of technology development and strategy, says the move will "allow 5G to reach its full potential" and not be limited by the shortcomings of the older, 4G LTE foundation that its initial 5G network relies on.

Those in rural areas or who have trouble keeping a signal deep in buildings, in particular, should see better coverage as part of the move.

Given that this new deployment is still in its early stages, the existing NSA network and its midband LTE foundation is still more capable than the new standalone 600 Mhz low-band option.
T-Mobile plans to make its other spectrum, including the newly acquired midband 2.5 GHz airwaves it got through its merger with Sprint, available to the standalone 5G network over time.

"This is all about having 5G available everywhere," Kuoppamaki says, "and us delivering on the promise of 5G for all." He adds that the SA 5G launch is nationwide, expanding T-Mobile's 5G footprint by 30% and allowing it to now cover 1.3 million square miles.

The White House and Defense Department on Monday announced a plan to accelerate the process by making a crucial new chunk of spectrum available to the wireless industry.

The spectrum, which telecom companies will share with the Pentagon, aims to help wireless carriers offer 5G more broadly across the US. It also should generate billions of dollars for the US Treasury when auctioned off. The frequency is currently being used for high-power defense radar, but the DoD has determined that it can be freed up without affecting military systems.

“It’s a big deal,” for the wireless industry, says Jason Leigh, an analyst at IDC who focuses on 5G. “The US is desperate for some mid-band spectrum.”
The frequencies involved in Monday’s announcement are called mid-band, a range that allows 5G signals to travel farther more reliably while relying on fewer cell towers.

The survey covers 1,000 respondents mostly in urban areas, but these views on mobile internet aren’t unusual for China.

The roll-out of 5G networks has made ditching landlines even more tempting. The fifth-generation wireless technology is supposed to provide much faster speeds and greater coverage, with the ability to download an HD movie in a matter of seconds.
China is trying to quickly cover the country in 5G, with the government making it a strategic priority to build 5G base stations.

Mayor Chen Rugui made the announcement this week. State media reported that Shenzhen was the first city in the world to have full coverage of a stand-alone 5G network, which doesn’t rely on existing 4G infrastructure.

“Shenzhen tops the world in the number of 5G base stations and in shipments of 5G terminals,” Jia told China Daily.

Cricket's most expensive plan, the $60/mo Unlimited option (which drops to $55/mo with Auto Pay), will now have access to 5G. Although the announcement was light on technical details, Cricket appears to be using AT&T's newer low-band 5G network, similar to what T-Mobile has been deploying across the United States. Then wherever I went around the San Francisco Bay area, I ran simultaneous download tests on them using an app called Ookla Speedtest. I’ve done this more than 4,000 times...

5G may hold promise for the years ahead — but across most of America in 2020, a 5G phone does diddly squat. Testing 5G phones, I’ve been clocking download speeds that are roughly the same as on 4G LTE ones. And in some places, like inside my house and along the California highway, my 5G phones actually have been slower..."

Networking and telecommunications giant Ericsson has acquired wireless edge WAN vendor Cradlepoint for US$1.1 billion.
US-based Cradlepoint last year partnered with Telstra to co-develop a 5G offering for its SMB and enterprise customers based on its NetCloud platform.

Ericsson said the acquisition was key to its ongoing strategy of capturing market share in the 5G enterprise space, and that Cradlepoint complemented its existing 5G enterprise portfolio.

Ericsson president and chief executive Börje Ekholm said, "Portfolio-near acquisitions are an integral part of our earlier communicated strategy. The acquisition of Cradlepoint complements our existing offerings and is key to our strategy of helping customers grow the value of their 5G network investments.”
Ericsson said the transaction was expected to close before the end of Q4 2020, subject to closing conditions.
