Ending the year in a flurry of 5G-related activity, Ericsson has made what could be significant announcements for the next-generation network going into 2020 as it enters the realm of standalone networks.

Ericsson’s cloud-native, container-based evolved packet core has been deployed in Telstra’s production network functions virtualisation infrastructure (NFVi), which could enable the Australian operator to significantly scale traditional wireless networks in creating new 5G services for consumers and enterprise customers.

“To achieve this transformation, Telstra’s network needs to become more flexible and efficient, and cloud-native, container-based applications such as Ericsson’s containerised evolved packet core are a key element of this.
Meanwhile, Ericsson says it is a step closer to standalone 5G after completing what it claims is the industry’s first successful voice over new radio (VoNR) interoperability test with device ecosystem partner MediaTek. With Standalone New Radio (SA NR), a 5G-enabled device does not need to rely on 4G technology to make 5G VoNR calls.

I have conducted a not very scientific audit. My conclusion is that 5G is not ready for mainstream adoption yet.

5G promises to revolutionise the way we communicate, connecting all sorts of things - cars, lamp-posts, maybe even products on a supermarket shelf - as well as people to the internet, at lightning speeds.
But the vision of smart cities in which data flows seamlessly, creating all sorts of exciting services, is some way off.
In the short-term, the operators have to persuade consumers that it is worth trading up to 5G. For now, the big selling points are speed and a lack of congestion.

But even though I was testing the three phones in central London - one of the few places you might expect to get solid 5G - the results were disappointing.
It is clear that all the networks need to invest a lot more money in infrastructure, and that far more 5G handsets need to become available before the new technology goes mainstream.

For the sake of interoperability, each new generation of Wi-Fi inherits many of the features and functions of past versions. 5G relies on 4G networks, and 4G performs certain functions via 2G/3G technology. But this process of inheritance means that each new generation also is born with some of the weaknesses of past versions.
The security flaws affecting 5G can also impact IoT devices through denial of service attacks, according to Positive Technologies.

The United States has lobbied Italy and other European allies to avoid using Huawei equipment in their next generation networks and to closely scrutinize rival ZTE, saying the companies could pose a security risk.
Both companies have strongly denied there is any such risk.

“We have passed legislation that guarantees national security. With the right defenses, the possibility of (Huawei’s) access is not up for debate,” minister Stefano Patuanelli, part of the ruling 5-Star Movement, told La Stampa daily.

The carrier notes that it’s now offering 5G at John Glenn Columbus International Airport, the “first U.S. airport with live, commercially available 5G Ultra Wideband service,” as well as Cleveland’s Progressive Field football stadium and multiple shopping centers in Virginia.

The newest tablet features prominently on the company’s Galaxy Academy website, and though there are no details on specs aside from the inclusion of 5G, Samsung is using the same promo image as its S6 Tab, which may indicate that’s one of the few differences between it and the current Wi-Fi and LTE models.
While this allegedly imminent release would mark the first time a tablet includes 5G, the tech available to use it is still scarce on a worldwide basis. South Korea has some of the most advanced 5G capabilities, with between 4 and 5 million Koreans already owning 5G phones.

But before it's widely used among consumers, more people have to buy smartphones and other devices that run 5G. Also complicating matters are efforts to stop the networks' rollout in the area because of safety concerns.

"Right now, I'd say 5G is in the hype cycle. Deployment is going to be slower than people think," said Mohan Sawhney, a professor at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Business. "Yeah, you'll get faster internet, but that's not a breakthrough. ... I'd stay tuned beyond 2020."

American 5G is in a poor state right now, but carriers are making at least some attempt to rectify that situation. AT&T is following up on its mid-December launch of real 5G by adding coverage for six major cities.
You should now have lower-band 5G data in New York City, Washington DC, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Detroit and Philadelphia if you're using the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. You'll also have access to extra-fast millimeter wave 5G ("5G+" in AT&T-speak) in parts of Baltimore and Detroit as well.

The deployment brings AT&T's normal 5G coverage up to 19 cities, and its millimeter wave access to 25 cities. It also underscores AT&T's middle-of-the-road approach to introducing 5G.
Whichever carrier you choose, it'll be a long while before 5G access is truly comprehensive.

The 5G drive comes as the joint venture is caught in a legal appeal process against an antitrust regulator’s move to block its proposed A$15 billion mega-merger with TPG Telecom Ltd .
In a joint statement, the companies said Vodafone Hutchison Australia, the 50-50 joint venture, would kick off its 5G rollout in the first half of 2020 with Nokia as the network vendor.

“They (Nokia) presented a compelling roadmap that aligned with our 5G objectives and will help us to continue improving our 4G network for our customers,” Vodafone Chief Executive Officer Iñaki Berroeta said in the statement.

The telcos will also be looking into aspects such as the right commercial price point for 5G roaming in both countries.

Samsung Electronics shipped over 6.7 million 5G smartphones in 2019, the company has announced.

The tech giant was the first to launch a 5G smartphone in the world, the Galaxy S10 5G, which coincided with South Korea's rollout of its 5G networks in April last year.
Since then, Samsung has launched four more 5G offerings: The Galaxy Note 10 5G, Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G, Galaxy A90 5G, and Galaxy Fold 5G.

According to Counterpoint Research, the company controlled 54% of the global 5G smartphone market as of November. However, 5G smartphones only accounted for 1% of worldwide smartphone sales in 2019.

But this number is expected to grow by almost 17 times over in 2020, the research firm said, with 5G smartphones to contribute around 18% of total smartphone shipments.
As more countries are expected to make 5G commercially available this year, Samsung has been working to cement its foothold in the next-generation network faster than rivals with its launch of various 5G products, from smartphones, chips, to network equipment over the past year.

Effective 5G use cases should be able to exploit at least one of the technology's three key advantages over existing 4G networks, said Dr Vinn Prabhu, deputy director of digital engineering at NYP's School of Engineering, who oversees the centre's operations.
These advantages are network speeds up to 20 times faster than 4G, higher reliability, and increased bandwidth capacity, which means more devices can be connected at any time.

“Huawei will support Malaysia in transforming from a technology adopter to a leader in 5G innovation and ecosystem development.”
The TechCity initiative follows an earlier agreement between Maxis and Huawei to deploy a 5G network across Malaysia, where the 700MHz, 3.5GHz and 26/28GHz spectrum bands will be allocated for 5G services.
