T-Mobile looks to be "all systems go" ahead of its launch of a low-band 5G network this Friday. On Monday the carrier announced that it has turned on the network and has begun accepting preorders for its first two low-band 5G phones ahead of the public launch later this week.
Both previously announced, the first two phones will be the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G and OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren.

The two devices will be fully capable of tapping into T-Mobile's new 5G network, which will cover 200 million people across the country on Friday. Using what is known as low-band spectrum, T-Mobile's network won't be as fast as the higher frequency millimeter-wave 5G that Verizon has been rolling out in cities throughout the year.
Unlike Verizon's 5G, however, the new T-Mobile 5G network will work indoors and cover large areas as opposed to just certain streets.

But don’t buy the new 5G phones yet. They only support 600MHz 5G, which is slower than other limited 5G networks from carriers like Verizon and AT&T.
Eventually, you’ll have phones that support low-band, mid-range and wide-band 5G. Those are the phones you’ll want to buy. But they’re not going to be available until 2020.

South Korea has secured around 4 million subscribers onto its 5G networks as of October, the Ministry of Science and ICT said.
The country's tech ministry added that the country had 3.98 million subscribers as of October, which was a rise of over 516,000 subscribers from the previous month.

Additionally, a total of 105,000 terabytes of traffic was recorded on 5G networks as of October. On average, one user used 28 gigabytes of data in that month.
Currently, commercialised 5G networks in South Korea are non-standalone and use 3.5GHz spectrum. The country has plans however deploy standalone 2.8GHz spectrum early next year.

5G technology predictions 2020

It is estimated that data will reach 175 zettabytes worldwide by 2025, up from 1.2 zettabytes in 2010, when 4G was first being deployed globally. 5G is known as the fifth generation cellular network technology. It is expected to be as much as 100 times faster than the present 4G systems, with up to 25 times lower latency or lag time, and as many as one million devices supported within one square kilometer. The foundation of 5G can be summarized in five technologies: millimeter waves, small cell networks, massive MIMO (multiple input multiple output), beamforming, and bytes full duplex.

Optus has successfully established an end to end 5G data call over its 2300MHz spectrum, making it the first telecommunications operator in the world to achieve this.

Optus completed the test call in Sydney, working together with technology partner Ericsson. Optus’ unique ownership of both 2300MHz and 3500MHz spectrum means that it will be able to build a true dualband 5G network which will ultimately provide customers with even more capacity and more coverage on 5G than a single band 3500MHz 5G today.

“There is strong industry interest in the use of the 2300MHz band for 5G and as the only telecommunications operator in Australia to currently have access to this band in metro capital cities, it’s great to be leading the way with testing and trialing this for future 5G deployment,” said Dennis Wong, Optus Managing Director Networks.
Optus currently has more than 300 5G sites live across Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and other key locations in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.

SK Telecom and Samsung Heavy Industries have developed a 5G-based autonomous navigation platform that will allow ships to move to set destinations on their own.

The ship safely sailed to the destination and avoided obstacles, SK Telecom said. They were also able to control and monitor the ship from the centre through using the telco's 5G network.
SK Telecom and Samsung's eventual goal is to develop a "5G smart yard" that will improve the safety of ships when sailing in narrow waters and near shore.

5G promises super-fast connections, low latency and better coverage. In the manufacturing realm, early adopter Whirlpool is deploying a private 5G network in one its Ohio factories to solve a major problem: Driverless vehicles inside the plant rely on Wi-Fi to navigate, and they stop dead when the factory environment causes the signal to degrade.
The sidelined vehicles create traffic jams, slow down production, and require hands-on attention before they can resume delivering parts.

Until now. Whirlpool is working to convert vehicle connectivity from Wi-Fi to 5G, which is less susceptible to the interference, with the help of AT&T and Seegrid, the maker of the self-driving vehicles.
How 5G helps
The vehicle conversions are straightforward, says Jeff Christensen, Seegrid’s vice president of product. “From our perspective, it’s just a matter of changing the type of radio receiver in our truck. Instead of listening to Wi-Fi frequencies, it is listening to 5G,” he says. “The vehicle itself is agnostic to what network it is on.”
The first phase of the 5G rollout will cover 200,000 square feet in the center of the plant. AT&T will initially provide the 5G infrastructure and manage it, but over time, management responsibility will migrate to Whirlpool.

South Korean telco KT and the National Fire Agency have launched emergency video call centres using 5G networks, they announced.
Those facing emergencies can now make video calls using South Korea's emergency number, which is 119, to emergency call centres and vice versa.

The telco has been trialling the service in six cities since October but it will now be available nation-wide.
KT is also working with Severance Hospital in the Seodaemon District to further apply 5G networks in emergency services.

AT&T's 5G low-band network is finally ready for consumers. The wireless giant announced Friday that it has officially turned on 5G in 10 markets across the country. The new network, which works with the $1,300 Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G that is also available today, is AT&T's first 5G network that regular people can use.

Areas for the initial launch include Indianapolis, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Birmingham, Alabama; Providence, Rhode Island; Rochester, New York and San Jose, California.
The next wave of markets set to get the new network include Boston, Bridgeport, Connecticut; Buffalo, New York; Las Vegas, Louisville, Kentucky and New York City. While no firm timeline has been given, AT&T says it will turn the network on "soon" and is working "toward offering nationwide coverage in the first half of 2020."

Samsung Electronics has made a first step into Canada’s telecommunications infrastructure market with a deal to supply equipment for Videotron’s wireless network in the province of Quebec and the Ottawa region of Ontario.

Neither Videotron nor Samsung is disclosing financial terms of their agreement, announced Friday, but both said it’s the beginning of a long-term relationship that has the potential to grow over time.

“Samsung and Videotron will continue to join forces to usher in the 5G era for enhanced communications, and push towards a proliferation of a next generation of wireless networks.”
Samsung will initially supply radio units for Videotron cellphone towers but hopes to eventually be chosen to supply Videotron with core network equipment and artificial intelligence enhanced analytics.

The Australian government has said it will spend AU$9 million across four years to fight misinformation about 5G and build "public confidence" in the technology.
Canberra will also be kicking in extra money for the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) to do extra research on electromagnetic energy (EME) emissions, Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said on Monday.

ARPANSA has repeatedly said 5G is safe throughout 2019, including pointing to research that, through double blind trials, disproved individuals who claimed exposure to electromagnetic hypersensitivity had caused them to feel side effects, such as a burning sensation.
The agency has also bluntly stated that higher frequencies used in 5G do not result in a higher exposure level.

"The enhanced EME program will make sure all Australians have access to clear, reliable and reputable information so they can take advantage of new technologies like 5G -- and feel empowered to do so safely."

"Ericsson has been introduced as a new vendor for 5G RAN, but we will also work with Huawei both to maintain the 4G network and also upgrade to 5G coverage in selected areas of Norway," Knudsen said in response to written questions.
Telenor's Finnish subsidiary DNA also uses Huawei as one of several vendors for 5G RAN, Knudsen said.
Huawei said it welcomed competition in 5G and looked forward to continuing its collaboration with Telenor.

NZ to auction early access to 5G spectrum

The New Zealand government has said it will open access to the unused half of the country's 3.5GHz band via an auction next year.

Winners at the auction, where 160MHz of spectrum will be open for bidding, will gain rights to the purchased spectrum from mid-2020 until 31 October 2022, before it switches across to long-term rights that will be gained via another auction.

"Progressing with 5G will ensure New Zealand keeps pace with global developments, give us world-class connectivity, and provide a platform for exciting new applications which can improve future livelihoods and ways of life."
In the forthcoming auction, there will be a limit on the amount of spectrum that operators will be able to purchase. Operators will also be required to return any spectrum in the 3.5GHz band and will have minimal use terms applied to them.

New Zealand telco Spark welcomed the government's announcement and said it would be taking part in the auction.

"Access to sufficient spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band will enable Spark to bring true mass-market 5G services to more New Zealanders as soon as possible," the telco said.

For months, T-Mobile has been saying it’s got a smarter, sounder 5G strategy than both Verizon and AT&T. To understand what an optimal 5G network looks like, you should think of a fancy cake with three distinct layers, the company’s executives have claimed.

At the top is ultra-fast millimeter wave technology, on which Verizon is so far basing its entire 5G experience
In the middle, you’ve got mid-band spectrum — like the 2.5Ghz airwaves that Sprint is currently using for 5G.
And at the base of everything is low-band spectrum, and that’s the part of the equation that T-Mobile lit up recently. Thanks to its vast 600MHz holdings, T-Mobile is already covering large stretches of major cities and suburbs without the signal gaps you’d encounter on Verizon 5G.

Even with its huge coverage footprint, T-Mobile acknowledges that 5G is still for early adopters. Heck, OnePlus even writes “5G is still developing” on the orange box of the 5G McLaren Edition.
Regardless of whether you’re the early adopter type, it doesn’t make sense to buy right now.

As a baseline, you’ll be able to count on speeds that match the best of what LTE can do right now. Faster day-to-day speeds will be a welcome advancement. But right now, that’s all that T-Mobile is giving you.
