Huawei Opens 5G Training Centre in the UK

Huawei on Friday opened the “5G Birmingham Training Centre,” the company’s first facility in the U.K. designed to enhance collaboration between local businesses and the education community and ensure 5G training is in place.

The new centre is 2,800 square feet and located at TriGate, Hagley Road West, Birmingham, B68 0NP. The office has the capacity to train 20 people at a time, with courses being tailored to meet training requirements. Huawei said that a typical course will last five days and will cover an introduction to 5G technology, principles of modern network engineering and hands-on practical installation of 5G network equipment. Once fully operational, the objective is for the centre to train upwards of 1,000 network engineers per year on the latest 5G technology.

In the UK, "there's no shortage of political will to deliver 5G, there's no shortage of commercial wish for it. There are some particular specific problems like a shortage of engineers, which we do need to address,", said Sir Andrew Cahn, non-executive director of Huawei UK.

KT rolls out 5G roaming services in Europe

South Korean telco KT has rolled out 5G roaming services in three European countries, the company announced.
KT subscribers will continue to be connected to 5G networks when they travel to Italy, Switzerland, and Finland.
The roaming service is currently only available for Samsung Galaxy S10 5G users, but KT said it will expand 5G roaming availability to more handsets via a software upgrade at a later date.

KT currently offers roaming services in 185 countries in 3G and LTE networks, and has plans to add 5G roaming to these nations once they have rolled out their 5G networks. It has already trialled 5G roaming with China Mobile ahead of seeing the world's second largest economy deploy its next-generation network sometime next year.
Its rival, SK Telecom, meanwhile launched 5G roaming services in Switzerland with a different telco, Swisscom, in July.

Nokia opens its first European 5G lab

Telco equipment maker Nokia has opened a 5G Lab at its global headquarters in Espoo, Finland that will allow customers to experience the company's 5G equipment, software, and services.

The lab, called 5G Future X Lab, will act as an innovation platform for internal Nokia research, prototype development, and testing, as well as allow the company to engage in wider research.

"The Future X Lab is an extensive build-out of a 5G end-to-end network, enabling customers to explore how a dynamically reconfigurable and automated network can increase network performance in areas of latency, capacity, reliability, and security while reducing total cost of ownership," said Nokia Bell Labs president and Nokia CTO Marcus Weldon.

Spark has switched on New Zealand’s first 5G network, in Alexandra in Central Otago, and says it will roll out 5G in another five heartland NZ towns before Christmas, followed by other locations early next year.

However access to these 5G services will initially be by invitation only. The initial service is live in the offices of Xerra Earth Observation Institute, which uses data from satellites orbiting the earth to build identification, monitoring and reporting tools that provide insights to industry, business and government.

“We believe that the first meaningful use-case for 5G will be increasing the capacity and speed of wireless broadband offerings,” he said.
“Initial testing in Alexandra has shown speeds for 5G wireless broadband of five to 10 times faster than for 4G wireless broadband in the same location.”

Ofcom opens investigation into EE outage

The UK's communications regulator is launching an investigation into an outage that blighted EE's mobile network earlier this year.

The outage took place on 21 May, the day before EE's 5G network rolled out, and concerns its Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) service. It was down for several hours and left some customers unable to place calls over the 4G network.
Under the Communications Act 2003, providers are required to take all appropriate steps to protect the availability of the provider's public electronic communications network.

Ofcom clarified "opening an investigation does not imply that we have yet formed any view about whether or not the company has breached any regulatory or legal provisions", but it aims to complete the evidence-gathering phase of its investigation by December 2019.

Analysts say the move is as much a show of solidarity with Beijing against the US as it is a drive to bring ultra high-speed internet to Russian tech users.

Moscow authorities say the network will become part of the city’s normal infrastructure within the next few years.
A source in Russia’s 5G research community said Huawei is the biggest investor in the development of mobile technologies in Russia, with “the largest research laboratory of all operators” in Moscow.

Deployment of 5G mobile networks are still in the early stages, as carriers have a long road ahead in deployments of the next-generation mobile network technology. However, Verizon is prioritizing access for education, announcing an initiative at the Global Citizen Festival in New York on Saturday to provide 5G network access to 100 Title 1 schools [...]

The first two of these deployments are in Cleveland, activated a few weeks ago. Verizon's education initiative, which is already deployed in 152 schools across the US, includes 1:1 access to Chromebooks or iPads for students and teachers, including 4G LTE connectivity to provide internet access at home.

"We wanted to go beyond that, and make sure our students also have access to emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality, technologies that can really leverage and harness the power of 5G," said Justina Nixon-Saintil, Verizon director of corporate social responsibility.
Consumer 5G access in Cleveland, where the first 5G Innovation Labs were opened in schools, is planned before the end of the year. AT&T has 5G deployments in 21 cities, though has yet to provide access to consumers. Verizon previously indicated plans to spend between $17 billion to $18 billion in 2019, including the commercial launch of 5G.

Indian telecom operators such as Airtel, Jio and Vodafone will collectively have to invest around $30.5 Bn for the 5G rollout in the country, according to a media report which cited the analysis of a Swiss investment bank UBS.

“The need for a dense site footprint and fibre backhaul in 5G will likely shift the balance of power towards larger and integrated operators with strong balance sheets,” UBS said.
One of the major barriers to 5G networks in India is the infrastructural gap.
According to UBS, the telecom sector can bring down their capital investment by about 15-20% if the three major telecom operators in India choose to share towers and fibre among them, “third-party tenancy poses upside risks to our estimates,” it added.

The answer is “yes,” suggests top Japanese carrier NTT Docomo, which today announced successful completion of an impressive stress test: a multi-base station handoff of 5G signals to a device on a next-generation Shinkansen bullet train.

Docomo’s test was noteworthy, thanks to the speeds of both the train and the 5G service. While the Shinkansen traveled at 283 km/h (~176 mph), the 5G signal delivered data speeds over 1Gbps, successfully transmitting 8K video from the network to the mobile device and streaming 4K video live from the mobile device to the network.

Today the British operator delivered the promise of expanding 5G coverage by switching on the network in a multitude of new locations.

According to EE, the telecom operator chose to expand its 5G coverage in especially busy areas around the U.K., such as transport hubs, busy streets, and bustling areas which are usually crowded. The intention behind this is to serve a higher concentration of its customers. For example, one of the new locations to get EE's 5G network includes the Highbury and Islington train station situated in London, which is frequented by 29.5 million people every year.
Additionally, the British mobile operator is switching on 5G in three more cities in the coming week - Bristol, Leicester, and Coventry - and seven more cities within this year; Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Hull, Sheffield, and Nottingham.

I tested Sprint's 5G network in NYC

Last month, Sprint made a big to-do out of launching its 5G network in New York City. The Big Apple is particularly problematic for 5G because the city is spread across four different landmasses and there are tall, signal-blocking buildings everywhere. There's a sense that if it works here, it can work in any city.

Sprint gave us a map of areas in Manhattan where the signal was supposed to be particularly strong. While I checked out several of those points, I also made it my mission to go away from those places to see how it held up.

If you meet those conditions and you're willing to pay more than $1,000 for a phone and $80 per month for Sprint's Premium Unlimited 5G plan, congratulations. You're the target audience for 5G in New York City. As for everyone else, you're probably better off waiting until all of those things are cheaper and more widely available.
Basically, Sprint's 5G network in the Big Apple is very cool when it works, but you most likely don't need it yet.

Bewildering logo peddler BT has announced that its 5G services will go live on 11 October.

BT's 5G offering, which unsurprisingly piggybacks on EE's network, will make its debut in 20 cities across the UK, including London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast, with a further 25 to be hooked-up before the end of the year.

In terms of speeds, BT says customers will experience average download speeds of between "100 and 150Mbps" - the same as those on offer from EE's 5G network.

This major step is part of the implementation of the European Commission Recommendation adopted in March 2019 to ensure a high level of cybersecurity of 5G networks across the EU.

The report is based on the results of the national cybersecurity risk assessments by all EU Member States. It identifies the main threats and threats actors, the most sensitive assets, the main vulnerabilities (including technical ones and other types of vulnerabilities) and a number of strategic risks.
The report identifies a number of important security challenges, which are likely to appear or become more prominent in 5G networks, compared with the situation in existing networks.

Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand (SCCANZ) has issued new guidance outlining design principles for 5G networks in cities.
The paper outlines nine principles for local government organisations to follow to allow cities to make the most of the opportunities afforded by 5G.

SCCANZ recommends that cities consider negotiating with other stakeholders to establish agreed maximum small cell densities per linear 100 m of space, develop an agreed approach to hiding 5G small cells and supporting infrastructure in plain sight, and ensure that deployment of 5G infrastructure be tree-friendly.

“We are entering a new phase in city shaping, with the scale of potential impact in our streets and public realm not experienced since the rollout of overhead power cables and electric lights,” SCCANZ said.
“Importantly, we know that cities are aware of the impending 5G deployment, but there is limited understanding of exactly what it will mean for cities and our streets. Many feel concerned that they are about to be overwhelmed by a mass rollout in a less than aesthetically pleasing way.”

Sunrise and Huawei open first 5G innovation center in Europe

On Monday, the two companies announced the opening of the center, which it says will help build the “Swiss 5G ecosystem.” Based at the Sunrise’s headquarters in Opfikon outside Zurich, the center will be focused on in incubating 5G-based services on everything from precision manufacturing to live streaming events to smartphone gaming and smart farming.
The opening comes a day before the Mobile Broadband Forum hosted by Huawei in Zurich where the Chinese company is expected to showcase its progress on 5G.

SK Telecom has vowed to offer the widest availability of 5G in the world by announcing its plans to launch 5G roaming services across 20 countries by 2020.

By the end of this year, it expects to roll out the service to four more countries where 5G is already available. SK Telecom added that its 5G roaming services will then be expanded to 20 countries in 2020, with the United States, China, and Japan to be among the countries where the services will be available.
Since the roaming service went live, 3,000 tourists have accessed 5G in Switzerland, it said.

The telco has also vowed it would expand the installation of 5G radio stations in South Korea in order to offer quality 5G networks to foreigners visiting the country.
Its rival, KT, similarly launched its own 5G roaming service in Switzerland, Italy, and Finland last month.

According to GSMA Intelligence, 5G’s growth across North America won’t be spread evenly across countries, but it also won’t be held back by a lack of population coverage.
