AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint have all launched early 5G networks and devices in the United States, leaving T-Mobile as the only major U.S. carrier without a presence in the growing market — but T-Mobile CEO John Legere doesn’t see it that way. His two bigger rivals have launched millimeter wave 5G networks that are limited in scale and still unmapped, he said today in a new blog post, and only Sprint’s just-launched 2.5GHz 5G network can deliver “a seamless and meaningful 5G experience.”

LG Electronics and SK Telecom agreed to jointly develop robot technology utilizing a 5G mobile network. A memorandum of understanding was signed between LG's robot business center and SK Telecom's ICT technology center for the joint development of 5G robot convergence technologies.

5G MEC processes data close to users by installing small data centers at 5G base stations or exchanges. SKT said that LG's robot using 5G MEC can send and receive a large amount of video data in real time for use in various convergence technologies, including video security services and indoor maps.

In three days, T-Mobile customers will be able to purchase the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, the company announced Tuesday.

Similar to the Verizon and AT&T's Galaxy S10 5G phones, T-Mobile's variant will utilize mmWave technology, with the new 5G network available in parts of six major US cities: Atlanta, Cleveland, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York. Customers who are not in these cities can still purchase the phone and use T-Mobile's LTE network.

Unlike Verizon and Sprint, which require certain data plans to tap into 5G, there is not a specific requirement to purchase a special data plan to access the new network.
The mmWave technology is extremely limited as shown by the company's 5G network and coverage maps. T-Mobile plans to launch a larger 5G network later this year using the low-band 600Mhz 5G spectrum, a technology not supported by the Galaxy S10 5G.

The claims were made in a debate moved by Gower MP Tonia Antoniazzi on Tuesday, where MPs discussed the risk of "health-related effects of electromagnetic fields" - a long-debunked urban myth - and 5G communications.

"The government are sweeping the health concerns under the carpet and there appears to be an absolute refusal to acknowledge that the health-related effects even exist," claimed Antoniazzi.
"I will not accept the response that electrosensitivity does not exist; studies show that it does. It has many effects that are not at all subjective, including effects on proteins and DNA, cell death, altered brain activity and effects in animals, as my honourable friends have mentioned. Those effects can be measured, and they cannot be dismissed as being all in the mind."

He claimed that 5G would also have a "detrimental impact on insect life", which is decreasing in number at a rate of 2.5 per cent a year.
It doesn't reflect well on the calibre of MP today that some of that nonsense should be echoed in the chamber of the House of Commons.

US forecasters have expressed concerns about 5G radio interference before, but now a group of scientific bodies has written to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over the issue.The joint letter, spotted by news site The Register, says the situation is "deeply concerning".
It asks for an auction of radio spectrum for 5G uses to be delayed.

Interference caused by increased communications activity could delay the reporting of important weather information to the public - for example during hurricanes - according to the American Geophysical Union, American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association.They argued that the weather networks they rely on are "crucially important for public safety and scientific research".

Ericsson to open smart factory in US for 5G equipment

Ericsson announced plans to build its first fully-automated smart factory in the US. The factory will produce Advanced Antenna System radios to boost mobile network capacity and coverage, including rural coverage, as well as 5G radios for urban areas.

The location of the US factory will be announced after concluding discussions with state and local authorities, and Ericsson wants the site operational in early 2020. The smart factory will be powered by Ericsson 5G products tailored for the industrial environment and will also seek LEED Gold Certification.
The 5G equipment will support automated warehouses, connected logistics and automated assembly, packing and product handling, and the use of autonomous carts.

Vodafone will switch on a 5G network on the Isles of Scilly next week, at the same time as it launches its live consumer 5G service in London – just three years after it first brought 4G to the remote islands 45 kilometres off Cornwall’s southwest coast.
Vodafone said its 5G network would bring immediate benefits to the islands, boosting tourism and giving islanders, local schools and the health centre access to online services usually only available to people on the mainland.

“5G is a game changer for the Isles of Scilly as it will provide the local community with much improved access to important online services,” said Scott Petty, chief technology officer at Vodafone UK.

If that sounds somewhat familiar, that's because BT's mobile services piggy-back on EE anyway, which launched last month in 16 cities, with a further 10 by the end of the year. Who'd have thought?

As with other networks, details on pricing remains vague but it's likely to be on a par with the comparatively higher price for EE's 5G services, compared to 4G.

Italy’s biggest phone company, Telecom Italia (TIM), plans to extend 5G services to six more Italian cities as well as dozens of tourist spots and business hubs by the end of the year.

TIM has already begun 5G services in Rome, Turin and Naples, is testing them in southern cities of Matera and Bari and plans to move next in Milan, Bologna, Verona and Florence by year-end.

British carriers apparently aren't put off by US pressure to ditch Huawei for their 5G network deployments. The Guardian's sources understand that all four of the UK's largest wireless providers (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone) are all using Huawei to build their 5G networks.
The Chinese firm is reportedly involved with six out of Vodafone's seven initial 5G cities, while it's also helping with "hundreds" of EE sites. O2 and Three have also awarded contracts to Huawei, according to the tipsters.

The companies are all believed to be using Huawei technology in the "non-core" elements of their networks.
Like it or not, Huawei could be useful in helping some countries offer 5G in a timely and reliable fashion.

Carriers will tell you that 5G is a huge leap over LTE, but how much better is it in the real world? According to Opensignal's crowdsourced data, it's indeed a lot faster -- but mainly in the US. The research firm has found that peak download speeds on 5G reach just past 1.8Gbps in the States versus 678Mbps for LTE, or about 2.7 times faster.

Both the gap and the overall speeds were lower in other countries, with Switzerland and South Korea coming closest at roughly 1.1Gbps on 5G. Most of these markets don't have millimeter wave access and are relying instead on "mid band" (typically 3.4GHz to 3.8GHz) frequencies to deliver next-gen wireless.
And of course, 5G networks are largely empty at this early stage. It could be a different story once 5G adoption picks up and providers become crowded.

Opensignal was optimistic, though. It noted that more 5G services would launch on new spectrum and wider channels, helping deliver on the technology's potential. For now, though, only a handful of people will see 5G at its fastest.
