so I got this kaspersky warning on the certificate, do you think I should ignore?
connection is not trusted by kaspersky, can anyone verify if he has the same problem?

well.. the certificate has both fields marked as invalid, and the connections seams "normal" apart the SSL connection with invalid certificate problem
@xxJackxx I understand but no point in asking if somebody doesn't use 4kdownloader
I wanted someone to quick check if his certificate is fine with his 4kdownloader
    it's a generic request

Are all of these 4K tools legit or not? I always wondered about this, they have this weird spyware vibe.

they serve the purpose of downloading videos, as I don't like to watch stuff live due to slow Internet I prefer to download a vid to watch later
don't ask me on legal side cause I am not a lawyer (spyware: illegal), but if someone tells me they are illegal and spyware/malware I stop using them

Some are, some aren't. It was why I thought more clarification on which one this is would be good.

After seeing those screenshots I would not trust it. Let's Encrypt is free, why would someone not use it?

No I don't think it's illegal to download videos, but I'm always cautious whith these kind of apps. I see they also offer tools like 4K Tokkit and 4K Stogram where they will probably ask for your Instagram and TikTok username and password, so make sure you trust them 100%. And I would also restrict 4K Downloader to only certain folders to prevent them from getting access to important data. And who knows, perhaps they are actually legit, but better be save than sorry.

I don't care what anybody does with it. There are just way too many of these with similar names and some are malware.

The point of giving full info when dealing with a security problem is to make sure we are all discussing the same software and most importantly, the source of the file in question.

Often legitimate software is copied, hacked and redistributed. We have no idea if you got it from the author or a random DL site.

As you haven't stated what sites you need to archive videos from, here is 2 safe suggestions.
    https://yd.3dyd.com
    https://youtube-dl.org (supports many sites)

    I got it from here:
    https://www.4kdownload.com/products/videodownloader/7

the site looks good, professional and legit, I think functionality wise it is the best kind of program for the task (the GUI is very good too, there are some in-programme ads though in the free version)

exept for the kaspersky's whining about the certificate when the program connects (outbound)

site certificate (4kdownload.com) is valid and the connection is encrypted though

the programme doesn't ask for passwords

how would you approach that, I forgot, you mean like Spy Shelter limiting or something else?

Yes, the site does indeed looks good, but that doesn't always tell the whole story. But I think I did use 4K Downloader in the past, and it seemed to work correctly at first, but then it lost the ability to download any videos, which sometimes happens when Google makes changes to YouTube. But anyway, yes you can restrict apps with SpyShelter or Secure Folders, this means only trusted apps can have access to your trusted data in for example the Downloads and Documents folder.

No, I agree with this, that's why I asked if anyone had any bad experiences with the 4K tools.

If its on Majorgeeks and Softpedia (which it is) you can very likely consider it ok.

Youtube-dl 's maintenance has come to a standstill since the beginning of June...
    It has already many issues.
Therefore it is advised to use the fork yt-dlp from now on.

Now after the most recent update it works again.
But I don't use it any more, because the free version has download restrictions.
Anyway, under the hood it just uses youtube-dl (or yt-dlp now?) and ffmpeg.

Instead I use yt-dlp al the time.
Open source and actively maintained. :)

There are GUI versions as well.

I personally would stay far away from these kind of tools.

I mainly use IDM but yt-dlp with yt-dlg GUI and sponsorblock is great.

the main thing that changed is that you cannot download at high speed anymore, you get like 200 kbs max and so buying pro version doesn't make sense except for multiple downloads

I need to check secure folders if its free,. SS is nice but it is tasking for me and time consuming to use it and set

Could you give us a reason why?

Most of the GUI's listed on the page I linked to are completely open source.

Yes, I now see they offer Pro versions of most 4K tools, so I'm guessing they are probably legit. And Secure Folders is a pretty good tool for folder protection, it's more handy than SS. It works just fine on Win 10. For example, you can block all apps except for a few trusted ones from accessing data in the Downloads and Documents folder, and all without alerts, so it's not annoying like in SS which strangely enough doesn't support auto-blocking of malicious behavior.

To me it doesn't play a big role if something is open source or not, but they are simply too unknown, but that's my personal opinion. I rather not mess around with them.

@Rasheed187 I mean it's a youtube thing to limit the speed, you can't download at high speeds anymore

OK, my bad, so it also doesn't work in the Pro version. But what I meant to say is that seems they reserved a couple of premium features for the Pro version, and often these kind of tools are probably legit since they are already making money. But like said before, I would still restrict them.

Due to the change, these tools might die or will have to rely on donations
I gonna download secure folders, btw. why documents and downloads, you mean areas prone to data exfiltration?

Actually you can. That issue has been fixed in yt-dlp. :)
So any other downloader app that uses yt-dlp under the hood will download with full speed from YouTube again.

I just saw that 4k Video Downloader runs at full speed as well now.
Don't know if it uses yt-dlp or applies the same logic though, because it's closed source...
