I didn't even think about this. So even when you ban the TikTok mobile app, it will keep collecting data via trackers on the web and other apps? I also wonder if the TikTok website will be banned?
If you already block trackers in your browsers and devices then ditching tiktok does make a difference. However the blindness of eveyone focused on the amount of data being sent is getting tiresome. The issue isn't the amount of data but the fact that the data from this Chinese owned company is legally required to be shared the CCP. No warrants are needed. Even if this is just 1 bit of data such as your location, this is more than enough for the CCP to work out if you have been in close proximity to any employees of a Chinese company. The company also fails year after year to allow auditing by 3rd parties so is in breach of the requirements of USA law. TikTok should have been banned long ago because they consistently fail to actually attend to any of the criteria they have been requested to achieve. We are now beyond the original 2 deadlines for keeping USA data in the USA alone. How many more years do you let them do the things you won't allow in your own companies ?
I think Bruce Schneier says it best in his article: "If we want to address the real problem, we need to enact serious privacy laws, not security theater, to stop our data from being collected, analyzed, and sold—by anyone." https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2023/02/banning-tiktok.html
