Early internet giant Yahoo has been hit with a £250,000 fine by the UK's data regulator over a breach which left details of half a billion users at risk after a Russian state-sponsored attack.

The fine comes after a 2014 cyber attack which left the details of millions of Yahoo account holders at risk. While there were 8 million UK Yahoo account holders, around 500,000 Brits were affected by the hack, while Sky email customers, which used Yahoo technology, were also affected.

Yahoo!'s UK limb has finally been handed a £250,000 fine for the 2014 cyber attack that exposed data of half a million Brit users.

Despite evidence that the firm knew about the mega-hack soon after it happened at the end of 2014, Yahoo! kept quiet until September 2016. Since then, the fines and court cases have kept rolling in as various regulators get in on the action.

Today, the Information Commissioner's Office issued Yahoo! UK Services Ltd a £250,000 fine following an investigation that focused on the 515,121 UK accounts that the London-based branch of the firm had responsibility for.

The ICO listed some mitigating factors in its decision notice, including that the exfiltrated data in the Yahoo! incident didn't include payment card or bank account info, as TalkTalk's did, and noted that it was a "sophisticated and persistent criminal attack, supported by the Russian Federal Security Service".

Yahoo's $117.5 million settlement of massive data breaches occurring between 2012 and 2016 has been granted preliminary approval by a federal judge.

The deal's terms don't “improperly grant preferential treatment to any individual or segment of the settlement class and fall within the range of possible approval as fair, reasonable, and adequate,” U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh in the Northern District of California wrote Saturday in an order allowing the settlement to advance.
Koh added that the resolution “appears to be the result of serious, informed, non-collusive negotiations conducted with mediators.”

Under the terms of the settlement announced Wednesday, Yahoo has agreed to establish a settlement fund that will underwrite free credit monitoring or alternative compensation for those who already have credit monitoring services, and out-of-pocket costs for losses related to the data breaches.
Yahoo also announced it will reimburse some of the costs for those who paid for Yahoo premium or small business services from the fund.

If you received a notice about the data breaches or if you had a Yahoo account at any time between Jan. 1, 2012 and Dec. 21, 2016, and are a resident of the U.S. or Israel, you are entitled to receive settlement benefits.
Consumers will be able to claim up to $25,000 each, according to Yahoo's release.
Consumers who already have credit monitoring services are eligible for a $100 cash payment as reimbursement for the existing service.

Lawyers who secured a $117.5m deal to resolve litigation tied to multiple data breaches at Yahoo could get paid $30m for their efforts.

Class counsel who secured the breach settlement are currently waiting for US District Judge Lucy Koh to give her final stamp of approval and to award them the fees, according to new documents filed in California federal court.
The deal will allow only 194 million Yahoo users in the US and Israeli who were affected by the breaches to claim compensation. Globally, the breaches impacted some 3 billion Yahoo users.

If even a third of the potential class members lodge a claim, then the payout will be $1.84 per person.

"Everybody probably has free credit monitoring at this point," said Steinberg. "If you’re expecting to get $100, you’re probably going to be significantly disappointed."

Yahoo!’s data breach class action is finally being put to rest. Last month, the Northern District of California approved the proposed $117.5M settlement to resolve the claims of approximately 194 million class members in In re Yahoo! Inc. Customer Data Sec. Breach Litig., No. 16-MD-02752-LHK, 2020 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 129939 (N.D. Cal. July 22, 2020).

The Court stated that “Yahoo’s history of nondisclosure and lack of transparency related to the data breaches [is] egregious.” As a result of Yahoo!’s lack of disclosure, settlement class members were unaware of the need to take any steps to protect themselves for several months.

All in all, despite the number of data breaches at issue, the large settlement class size, Yahoo!’s delayed disclosure to impacted individuals and the public, and the sale of the breached Yahoo! data on the web, after taking into consideration the overall relief offered by the proposed settlement, and the distinguishing factors of the data breaches, the Court deemed the $117.5 million settlement as fair, adequate, and reasonable.
