115 Million Pakistani Mobile Users Data Go on Sale on Dark Web, claims cybersec company

Rewterz, a pioneer of specialized cybersecurity services in Pakistan, claims to have discovered a data dump of 115 million Pakistani mobile users’ data that has shown up for sale on the dark web today. The cybercriminal behind this data breach is apparently demanding 300 BTC ($2.1 million USD) for the data.

This indicates that financially motivated threat actors are active in Pakistan and organizations are becoming a victim of these cyber attacks.
The stolen data includes users’ personal details, such as full name, complete address, their mobile numbers as well as their NIC number and Tax Number.

Rewterz Threat Intelligence experts believe that the scale of this breach raises questions about the data security and privacy of telecom companies.

PTA investigates data breach of 115mn Pakistani mobile users

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is investigating the reported data breach of some 115 million Pakistani mobile users, which is being sold on the dark web for millions of dollars.

“It is still a claim that data of 115 million Pakistani users has been breached but we are trying to verify the authenticity of the claim by someone on the dark web," stated Chairman PTA Major General (R) Amir Azeem Bajwa, quoted Arab News.
“There are multiple reports we are receiving during our investigation as few claims are surfacing that it is old data," he added. The chairman said that they have contacted all mobile operators and will be able to verify the report in a week.

The details of 44 million Pakistani mobile subscribers have leaked online this week, ZDNet has learned.

The leak comes after a hacker tried to sell a package containing 115 million Pakistani mobile user records last month for a price of $2.1 million in bitcoin.
ZDNet has obtained copies of both data sets. We received the entire 44 million records released online today, but we also received a sample of 55 million user records that were part of the 115 million data dump. Based on the data sets, we can conclude that the two are the same.

The vast majority of entries in the leaked files contained mobile phone numbers belonging to Jazz (formerly Mobilink), a Pakistani mobile operator. However, ZDNet also identified phone numbers that appeared to belong to other mobile operators.
A Jazz spokesperson did not reply to a request for comment; however, the company previously disputed that the data came from its servers.

The incident is already under investigation in Pakistan, where the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) are looking into the matter since last month when a hacker first tried to sell the entire 115 million batch on a hacker forum.
Threat intelligence company Rewterz, which first spotted the April forum ad and analyzed data samples, also concluded that the data was real, and also avoided directly blaming Jazz, lacking any evidence.
