I just downloaded and installed Firefox 1.0. I like it very much, but I have noticed that the HTTP download (little box that shows size of download) does not run as it did in IE. For example when I run a test of my DSL speed from
http://www.dslreports.com/stest--in IE it would show the size of the downloading applet in the Nod32 icon in the taskbar. It does not happen with Firefox. Is this a problem?

Oops, I was wrong. Just ran the speed test again and it does show the download in Firefox. Go figure ;-)

It doesn't show up for me regardless of the browser I use, or whether I set HTTP scanning for high compatability or high efficiency. All my IMON settings are correct. Running 2.12.2 and XP SP2.

I use Firefox and I saw that %$#$% box every time I downloaded anything. It was awful. I got rid of IMON HTTP scanner immediately. (I have never used IMON email scanner except briefly as it is unneeded). I won't put up with junk like that and the significant slow down of my computer for what? AMON protects me. IMON is stupid redundancy that is totally unnecessary. NOD32 is getting just as bloated as NAV which I left for NOD32 because it wasn't bloated and didn't sport unnecessary junk. :(

Not that this is a big deal in my life. I really don't care if I see pop-ups, or not. I just like to understand the reason why and if it's an indication I have something amis with my installation.

That’s pretty harsh, I and others have seen this new HTTP scanner module stop threats at the front door. Why open the door and wait until they are inside before throwing up defenses? That just makes no sense whatsoever…

You have a very powerful machine, I have several, one at home and others at work, I also have Celeron 2.0 and 2.4GHz machines, none, and I seriously mean none have seen a slowdown with the new HTTP scanner. If your machine is effected to such an extent then I would suggest a format, bringing your system back to Windows only, then install imaging software such as Acronis True Image, then Nod32, then image, then your next piece of software, then image… I did this with the following software until I found a conflict that I had been having for months with software that had been previously all happy together:

    Windows
    Windows SP2
    Acronis True Image
    Nod32
    Prevx
    Spyware Blaster
    Spyware Guard
    Spybot Search and Destroy
    AdAware
    ZoneAlarm - version 4.5.594
    Script Defender
    Proxomitron
    Kye U's filters for Proxomitron
    Ewido - without file monitoring
    IE Spyad
    Fire Fox
    File Checker

System Safety Monitor - errors detected, went back to image of File Checker

    Security Patches then imaged again

Tried System Safety Monitor for 2nd time - errors detected, went back to
    image of Security Patches.

Conclusion, SSM no longer plays nicely with Nod32.

AMON protects when an inffection is already sitting on your system, and only upon activation…

Why actually scan with Nod32, when AMON in time would eventually pick up the threat upon activation, surely following this path makes the scanner redundant… ;)

IMON is FIRST DEFENSE, no two ways about it. It is your choice to lower that defense, however being that the manufacturer has chosen to go down the line of layered defense I would not see this as a wise choice, and as stated it is "your choice”.

IMON is not redundant, this cannot be attributed to IMON at all, as I stated it is "First Defense", thus AMON in fact becomes 2nd Defence, and redundancy in relation to security is a very good thing…

There is no comparison between the two products…

    Cheers :D

I was under the impression you could uncheck the 'automatically display download....' option (although I haven't tried it yet) to disable that feature without resorting to drastic action.

Indeed you can, under IMON>Setup> Miscellaneous (tab)

Mele just doesn't like the HTTP scanner, that's all ;)

    Cheers :D

Yep. I don't like the HTTP scanner at all. I think for many that it is redundant and unnecessary.

I just uninstalled the current version and went back to the earlier version that doesn't have the HTTP scanner or the changes to AMON. AMON had become way too sensitive in the current version also. Everytime I left the computer, it would find false positives and eicar all in System Restore. I tried to exclude System Restore and could not and then tried to exclude each instance and could not. It would find 2-5 "viruses" in just a few minutes when I would go away from the computer. It was driving me nuts.

So, now I have to unzip for it to find a virus but I much prefer that to this terrible oversensitivy in the latest version. I was away from the computer just now for about two hours, and blessed relief, AMON in this older version did not find one "virus" while I was gone!

I also have gone from a TWO MINUTE shutdown to abut 25 seconds so NOD32 was part of that problem as, with or without my scanner running at shutdown, I now have a much shorter shutdown time than with the current NOD32 version.

As for what is the first defense ...well, that is easy ...it's ME! Not IMON. I never, ever open an email attachment from someone I don't know. I never, ever open an email from someone I don't know. If I think it might be a legitimate email then in Outlook Express, I right click on the bolded email, select "properties", then details, where if I see it is not addressed to me then out it goes and that is about 90% of spam. If it is addressed to me and I still am unsure about it, then I click on "message source" and read it safely there. None of this is really necessary as my ISP scans all incoming and outgoing mail with Symantec corp and dslr mail is scanned by KAV, but I do it anyway. If I do, on a rare occasion, get an attachment from someone I know, I always save it to disk and then scan it using Paolo's shell extension. If it is zipped, it doesn't matter if it is infected as it can't do any harm until I unzip where upon AMON shoud catch it. Granted, if it is something very new and there is no signature yet AMON may miss it since this older AMON has no adv. heuristics, but adv. heuristics in AMON has caused irritating behavior.

As for the HTTP scanner, again I am the first and best defense not IMON. I don't know what sites you guys are visiting that have all these viruses that you are getting that IMON is stopping. I don't do P2P or visit gambling, porn, warez sites. I spend about 80% of my time at dslr, here and computer cops, etc. I don't think I will get viruses at any of these sites. :) So, i am really only concerned about a legitimate site that has been compromised and I don't know it and I go there.

I also use Firefox and Mozilla and run Proxomitron. I also don't get spyware. I can see where the HTTP scanner could be useful for the user who refuses to practice safe hex and won't heed the recommendation of dslr to move to Firefox. I think the responsible, safe hex practicing users should be able to leave IMON and EMON out of the install entirely.

Good response Mele, however you have not addressed why you are having so many problems on such a powerful machine, problems such as a 2 minute shutdown that I have not seen, nor have I seen anyone else bring up. As stated above, I would be formatting and imaging to find what the cause was...

As well, you are clearly not an "average" user, one that typically walks through the door of one of my shops, these customers need protection from themselves, and IMON's HTTP scanner is/will be their "First line of Defense" together with Spyware prevention, Spyware Removal and Firewall software as a minimum, even this will not protect some of them from themselves… some of them just looooove being "click happy" and do not want to change their ways... ;)

It's the old saying, you can lead a horse to water, however you can not make it drink… ;)

    Cheers :D

I do understand the importance of the HTTP scanner and even the email scanner for the average user and, yes, I can imagine all the things most who walk into your shop need...they need protection against themselves! :D I also understand why Eset is going down this road...just as Kaspersky has with 5.0 personal. It is frustrating for me though. ;)

As an aside....I couldn't believe it...but AMON, in this older version, alerted on eicar in System Restore while I was away the second time from the computer. I know I have had eicar in System Restore before because I usually keep copies of the eicar tests on my hard drive. I'm surprised AMON alerted because I know it used not to and I thought it was something new in the beta and then the new current release causing this but now I see it also in the older version. I wonder what is triggering AMON? I guess I can try running System File monitor again to see if I can figure out what is accessing System Restore that then makes AMON notice the eicar there. If I could exclude System Restore from AMON, I would be much happier. I guess I need to ask tech support how to do that successfully. I even excluded the actual eicar file in system restore that AMON goes off on but it was still going off on it in the current version and I bet if I exclude it in this older version it will still go off too. At least, I haven't seen AMON alerting on FP in this older version. I was getting a lot of that also in the current version.

Ahhh...it was the once a day restore point being made that caused AMON to alert. Well, if just alerts once a day ...I can handle that. :)
