    hi

yur log shows that you're a little behind on windows update: no xp service pack, no IE service pack.. go to windowsupdate ASAP and install all available patches.. an updated operation system is often the best protection

first you must unzip hijackthis to a permanent folder, you will not get any backups if you run it from a temp directory.

once you've done that run hjt again from that folder, close all other windows except hjt, tick the boxes next to these lines and click FIX( i might help to print this list):

    recheck this log
My husband normally worked on our computer but unforunately because of a brain injury he has been unable to, because of that happening I have had to jump in and try and solve some of the problems we were having.I ended up haveing to write our hard drive to zeros reinstall windows 98 then upgrade back to Windows XP. Some how after that it said we had spybot worm in 3 files and 1 randex we were also told just to buy another computer prior to this. Now things are up and running thanks to your awesome help. A few days prior after running spybot search and destroy originally it came up with 5 entries of DSO Exploit that it would say it fixed then they came back up each time I ran it, I ended up going into advance and having it override the DSO exploit so it wouldnt come up I dont think it actually got rid of it it is just more or less hidden I think, is that still a problem? I dont know if you are familiar with that one? Well finally yesterday I sent in my log after doing hijack this on it and was told to fix somethings by Illuka well I have done that and here is my new log. Just wanted to thank you again so much for all of your help! Let me know how it looks and if I need to do anything! Thank you !!

ok now it's starting to look much better!

    some minor things:

i'd uninstall incredimail, they say they're not spyware, but incredimail shows advertisements, and shares information about you with third parties, not to mention they track your online behaviour... that's spyware to me..

same thing goes for copernic agent, it's partners include major spyware companies like doubleclick

so i would uninstall both applications

you did not mention scanning with adaware, so here is some instructions on that:

    1. Download and install Adaware (free edition) . (Click on "Adaware" in the left-hand column near the top at their website to download the free edition.)

    2. Go to Start > Programs > Lavasoft and click on AdAware 6 to open the program

    3. Look at the icons on the top right of the page and click on the ‘world’ and let AdAware update the spyware reference list

    4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

    1. In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected:
    · Automatically save log-file
    · Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
    · Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

    2. Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select :
    · Scan Within Archives
    · Scan Active Processes
    · Scan Registry
    · Deep Scan Registry
    · Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
    · Scan my Hosts file
    · Under ‘Click here to select drives + folders’, choose:
    · All of your hard drives

    3. Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select:
    · Include additional process information
    · Include additional file information
    · Include environment information
    · Include additional object details

    4. Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select:
    · Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
    · Unload recognized processes during scanning
    · Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    · Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
    · Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
    · Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

    5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

    6. Click ‘Start’ and on the next screen choose ‘Activate in-depth Scan’ at the bottom of the page and then choose:
    · Use Custom Scanning Options

    7. Click ‘Next’ and AdAware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

    8. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

    9. REBOOT

also delete the following files if still present:
    wugrds.exe
    msconfg.exe
doublecheck the spelling here before deleting, because the worm files are named almost like important windows system files

update your antivirus and do a full system scan with it

and post a new log, the above one was almost a clean one..

download it again, this time an unzipped package.

before downloading create a new folder on your desktop: right click an empty space on your desktop, select new> folder from the menu. name the new folder to hijackthis.

http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/downloads/tools/HijackThis.exe right click this link and select "save as". browse to the folder you just created and save hijackthis.exe there.
then run it from that folder. then fix those lines in my post above, and post a fresh log when done

Illukka thank you for the info above I will try that, I have already done the items above in your prior log yesterday that you had mentioned. I did uninstall Copernic also but have not uninstalled Incredimail yet. Is Incredimail really bad because we like the program? Strangely enough I did a spybot search and destroy last night and it found 1 entrie of Media Plex and 1 entrie of Double Click. Is that bad? Could that be from the incredimail? Thanks so much I will send a new log asap!

if you feel incredimail is the one for you, then it's ok.
you might still want to check their site, especially their privacy policy

everything seems to be in order now
    :)

Just one other quick question, originally when we had the problems and we had to write zeros reinstall win 98 then upgrade back to our XP, I lost some programs such as our Norton (the norton I just downloaded the trial version)and Microsoft Word, do you have any idea as to how I can get these back or are they lost forever. I was thinking maybe the programs are hidden and maybe you might know how to find them to see if they are. Thank you

it might indicate a corrupted download, downloaded files are usually compressed.
