Bot Revolt (PeerBlock/PeerGuardian)

Bot Revolt is a fork of peerblock which is a fork of peerguardian, both are now abandonware.

I have been in touch with the Bot Revolt support and this is some interesting information:

The only "bad" thing is that the free version for now is not able to update the IP list (you can reinstall the software to get the IP list update, it take 10 secs) but I think that soon or later they will add this ability to the free version. Also is ad supporter but not intrusive at all, just a little banner when you open the interface.

I am using the paid for version. Works very good, and support is great!
Always starts up. PB sometimes never started on boot.
Agreed the free version sucks, get what you pay for.

 

PeerBlock does have start-up problems, but Task Scheduler (Run with highest privileges) mostly fixes that. Might need to restart the process to see tray icon on rare occasions.
Only issue is multi-user startup, Task Scheduler doesn't work at all except with At log on of my account for Trigger. Still works with switch users and the other account is rarely used anyways.
As for the "you get what you pay for", I manage an enormous list proving otherwise. You get what they're willing to provide.

 

Well, to each his own. PB I guess will work for some for the time being, to bad it has gone by the wayside.

Free version is probably 'ad supported'. Paid does not. Like most software.

 

What's the difference between BotRevolt and Peerblock ??

Which 'extra' blocklists do you use for security purpose ?

 

Ad-supported crippleware (BotRevolt Free) vs open-source freeware (Peerblock). Only thing you can do is install and run for BotRevolt, no more than disable/uninstall (not even updates). PeerBlock is outdated unfortunately, and has startup issues (that can be mostly fixed).

Peerblock have lists for far more than just security, like for P2P, adblocking, countries, etc. I personally use DROP, Hacker (not shown on iblocklist.com), Hijacked, Malicious, and Spyware.

Why it doesn't appear on the list of iblocklist ?

Bot Revolt fre, even if you can add your personal list, it doesn't lauch those user's lists. Peerblock, can do it for free !!

For those, who have the paid version, could you tell us more about the 'Incognito' experiences. How does it work ?

 

I'm seeing a lot o "Peerblock is abandonware and outdated", but... it still works (and better) than Bot Revolt. Besides, there aren't any ads.

Peerblock still updates its lists automatically, so why should one change? Just for a new UI? It really doesn't make any sense to me.

I'm not trying to be critic about Bot Revolt, but i don't see any advantages in it.

 

It's on the default list of PeerGuardian Linux, so might as well. I tried malc0de and ATMA as well, but way too many false positives.

Indeed, I wonder if you can even whitelist FP's.

Yeah, the embedded images are broken on Chrome and Internet Explorer 10. Then I tried Wayback Machine (after Google Cache displayed the same), and voila. The "live web" page displays it properly for some reason.

 

I thought it was free 1-year license. It is a discount only ($9.99) not free.

 

The offer expired after the first 1000 people.
