Curious about good alternative to NOD32

I've had NOD32 for a long time, and I'm having an issue with the length of scan times right now, and the length of time on the startup scan. They're both too long, and I'm tired of it. If I get no resolution, I'm dumping for possibly the paid version of Avira. I know it's always had good reviews, but I'm curious what people think. Is this a good choice as far as protection and low use of resources, and is the free version sufficient, or am I better off with the paid version?

Also curious what other suggestions anyone has.

Avira is good. Maybe you can try Avast too(first free then paid). Avast is low on resources and has a very fast scanner.

 

Yeah, I'm noticing that Avast and Avira are both up there in popularity and in the independent testing.

I might add that I am talking about a paid version for recommendations. I think I have it down to Avast, Avira Premium, or maybe BitDefender.

No it isn't. There isn't a way to turn off the startup scan in version 5, or in version 4.

As Cudni said check forum polls and opinions at least to just get ideas.Avira has strong heursitics with some false positive but there quick to fix them and with my experience, they respond to suspicious file submission with return courtsey emails.

Test them out one by one and form your own opinion and see how each one runs with your system.30 day trials should give you a good idea.Good luck.

 

Well, I stand corrected. I guess I just assumed that, because in version 4, I don't believe you could disable it. At least that's what I seem to remember.

Oh well, whatever! I recommend you take a look at Norton -- it's very light; has a powerful behavior blocker (SONAR); scores very high on all tests.
