Scientific Linux 6.1 Officially Released

Troy Dawson just a short while ago officially released Scientific Linux 6.1. Here is the release announcement with download links...

Scientific Linux 6.1 is now officially released and available.
We want to thank everyone who has contributed, tested, and given us feedback. We feel that this is one of our best releases yet, and we couldn't have done it without the entire SL community.

Scientific Linux 6.1 has a new graphical theme called "Edge Of Space" provided by Shawn Thompson. We want to thank him for all the work he put in making this release look more polished.

thanks for great info Trespasser i really like the way they tweak logo screen and default wallpaper also this one look pretty and rocksolid i tried the RC2 64bit live cd pretty satisfied with that distro ....vlc flash everything working as it should )

one thing i want to know is there any change between the RC2 and this one or RC2 is forwarded to final release

We found that the easily fixable, yet significant bug, was actually 2
easily fixable, yet significant bugs.
We apologize to all those who have been downloading and mirroring the
iso images, only to have them disappear again. The next batch of iso's
should be going up in an hour or two.

And thanks go out to Brian Dudek who found both bugs.

thanks Trespasser just got my motherboard replaced going to check this one on my laptop


sensors on desktop look great like fedora used to be 47-49 where this one is 48-51 not much difference but look pretty stable distro.

 

Is there an easy way to dual boot it with windows? Any tutorial specific to scientific linux? When I installed alongside Vista I couldn't boot to windows and there was no menu on boot to choose the OS. I used fixmbr and fixboot commands using windows disc to log in to windows. But now I can't use Scientific Linux and so I have deleted its partitions.

 

hmm its pretty simple

just install gedit

and

$su

# gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

there add

title Microsoft Window Vista
root (hdx,y)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1


so if you have one hardisk the your x=0
x= number of your harddisk -1


and y = number of your windows partition -1

means if your windows on second partition then y = 2-1 =1


so if 1st hardisk x=0
and 2nd partition y=1

fill x and y

title Microsoft Window Vista
root (hd0,1)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1


how to know your partition number

fdisk -l

or

you can check it running gparted just dont format or do anything just see the hardisk number

just install lm-sensors and gnome sensors and keep an eye on sensors if its laptop i feel linux is pretty hot on sensors so better keep an eye

Of course one must not overlook the fact that the potential repository conflicts apply equally
to both these great OS's.
Have posted link to your review on SL forum, I wonder how they will react.

I find the aforementioned forum a lot more supportive than the CentOS one, where I have never signed up for fear of ridicule.

It's not really fair to compare a CentOS 6.0 DVD install with a Scientific Linux 6.1 CD install, is it? The SL 6.1 CD, as you pointed out, lacks a lot of the applications, like printer support for instance, that's available on the CentOS 6.0 DVD, plus a lot of other stuff (like gconf-editor, office applications, or alacarte). I tend to take this review with a grain of salt...or more aptly...Mrk appears to be blinded by CentOS... . In my opinion SL 6.1 is better. As I stated in the CentOS 6.0 review I had big time network problems that I never experienced with SL 6.0 or 6.1. Also, I'm not the only one who experienced network problems with CentOS 6.0. Just head on over to the CentOS 6 forum and read about it. I found if I assigned a DNS server (like OpenDNS) then my problems seemed to have been improved.

If SL 6.1 had anything equivalent to AptOnCD (for installs with a poor network connection or re-installs) I'd move to SL 6.1 permanently right now.

Still, your review was good and contained all the usual Mrk flair.

I didn't compare the cd/dvd apps repertoire. That's really not the main point. The big difference is in the yum/repo management, the fine tuning of the overall product. Tiny things really.

i agree mixing of repo is serious disaster which i being a idiot did it my self at 1st so advantage on centos as no default mixing of repo is there for those who have no expriance with it.

how ever one thing i notice and worring about the most is sensors

can you comparations of sensors of same hardware on centos with SL

is there any comunity base repo like RPM Fusion of fedora

i mean something like that Fusion of all in one place

as far stability i must say both centos and Scientific Linux 6.1 pretty stable and rocksolid here non give me issue so far just need to carefull with 3rd party repo

after setting up yum priorities no conflict so far
