Geswall + Sandboxie FREE really overkill?

I just want to confirm if it really is overkill based on how I use them which is explained in my setup.

 

If it works for you and it doesn't cause you any conflicts, then its not overkill. Only you can determine what works for your needs and your system. Personally what you do, would drive me nuts. I like convience and I have everything sandboxed. I also can't stand using no script with firefox. What I have works for me and not for someone else.

 

it works for me.. no slowdown, no bsods etc.
this PC is used by the whole family so the setup should be as user-friendly as possible.
Noscript is just a toy I play around with. I disable them when my family uses the PC.
once I tamed noscript, I may let my family experience it.

 

i think it's overkill.
they do similar jobs, although in different ways.

small is beautiful.
i think it's always good to use less time, resources, and energy to accomplish any goals/tasks in life.

yeah, i'm lazy, so what?

 

Why don't you use Bufferzone Pro free in stead of GW + SBIE

Drop Firefox and use IE9 instead

Bufferzone versus SBIE
+ you can tell to allways isolate USB devices etc
+ you can choose to isolate new executables (all - or only non-signed)
+ easier to deal with e-mail programs & attachments

==> this is the GW like system wide protection BZ has


Bufferzone versus GeSWall
+ clear sandbox easily
+ easy to add outbound firewall containment of untrusted objects (just set all to block and allow e-mail & browsers to go out)

==> this is the SBIE like application based virtualisation

- Bufferzone PRO is unstable for me and freezes my PC once in a while.
- I can't have 2 or more different sandboxes either.

during Windows startup I open BZ PRO's GUI and I see alot of IE processes running in it although I did not open IE, no iexplore.exe in task manager either.
maybe conflicts with EMET?

- Prevx SafeOnline not working properly even after allowing it to interact inside bufferzone programs. (i did this with EMET too but I guess it won't work either)

 

Overkill is a matter of opinion I guess.
All I can offer is my own experience with running GesWall and Sandboxie together some time ago.
Although I was running my browser isolated with GesWall and sandboxed with Sandboxie.
I remember all ran fine (or seemed to run fine) for a while then I received the dreaded Blue screen of death.
Needless to say that combo never made it back on my system.
Your mileage may vary. Good luck with whatever you decide.

 

I have used SB and GW on my vista 32 a couple of years ago with no problems, but now im running Comodo D+ and SB on my 7 64 with alot less chance of conflicting and possible a stronger set-up to boot. You can use SB by itself without GW, so yes you may have overkill.

 

i will prefer just to use either BZPro or Geswall alone for the system wide protection

 

I use Geswall for everything internet facing besides XChat and MSN those two are sandboxed with sandboxie FREE. This solution works well for me. As geswall does a very good job but I am slightly paranoid about using IRC as I have seen way to many exploits there. :/

 

I don't think it's overkill since you specifically use them for different tasks...Furthermore, you're using Sandboxie Free so you're not forcing programs to run in both Sandboxie and Geswall at the same time...

If it was Sandboxie paid and Geswall protecting the same apps, then that might be considered overkill...

I am guessing that members here didn't really look into your specific detailed setup

P.S. I envy those who can run Geswall without much problems. Geswall has never "sit right" on my PC...

 

Don't guess...
Running two (2) Sanboxes (even covering different areas) reminds me of
running two (2) or three (3) AV's (even covering different areas).
Incremental Security is minimal compared with System Overhead, Conflicts etc.
This is not Security but Insecurity...

I'm sure there are "hobbyists" who have tried to run together many Sandboxes:
CIS, avast! Pro, Sandboxie, GeSWall, BufferZone, Ruturnil etc.

This is where Security is out-placed by Paranoia...

 

and not only that but sooner or later will create conflicts or posible blue screens
