Not sure if this is the right forum to place this question. If not, apologies.

I have recently converted (so to speak) from Firefox to IE8 after repeated crashes from FF 3.6.8 and the inability to uninstall add ons. Then there's the growing evidence base (I think) that IE8 is shaping up to become a good security choice.

Basically I'm looking for some words (or links) of wisdom relating to strengthening IE8. For example, can I implement an equivalent of ADBlock Plus and other addons that I got used to in FF eg noscript, ghostery, Better Privacy etc. Especially keen to 'defeat' those flash supercookies.

I have already implemented a reg script which means I don't have to re-enable In Private Filtering every time I open up IE and have protected mode on etc. . Apart from that I'm a bit lost in this 'new world' and would appreciate some wise guidance :)

To add extra strength to that neat little addon, here's info on how to get full AdBlock Plus weekly updates for IE. Simple Adblock doesn't appear to nail them all. Kudos to the good folks at 'overclockers.co.uk' and NZ's 'the fanboy' for the following info: -

Not many people know this but IE8 has very powerful built-in Adblocking capability. It is called InPrivate Filtering. It can detect and block ads by itself but you can also add a list of items to block.

The list is the one that Firefox uses and this is a mini-guide on how to use it for those who don't know. The list will also be updated weekly (Friday/Saturday).

If you already know what to do and just want the latest filter list, the link is in the post after this one. It will be updated weekly :)

The list (updated weekly on Friday/Saturday) contains exactly the same information that Firefox users obtain through their AdBlock Plus Addon

There are 2 steps to setting it up:

    1. Enable InPrivate filtering

    2. Import the filter list

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Step 1:

InPrivate filtering isn't enabled by default so It needs to be enabled first.

    1. Open Internet explorer 8

    2. Under the safety tab, tick 'Inprivate Filtering'. If its the first time, there will be a popup message: click 'block for me'

    3. Download and extract the following file:

    http://cid-83edeb637d37824c.office....ers for IE8/InPrivate Filtering Always on.zip

It contains a file that enables InPrivate filtering automatically. It cannot harm your computer in any way.

    4. Double click the extracted file and select yes/ok when prompted to do so. And its done.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Step 2:

    1. Download and extract the latest filter list from:

    http://cid-83edeb637d37824c.office....Adblock filters for IE8/filter 2010-08-21.zip [08/21/10 update].

    2. Open IE8, Click the safety tab again, and click Inprivate Filtering settings. This time click Advanced settings

    3.png

    3. Under Advanced settings, click Import and browse to the location where you stored the extracted files. And select the one that begins with 'filter...' and open it.

    4.png

    4. You should now see the filter list loaded. Thats all. The filter list is updated once a week on Friday/Saturday.

Note: if you have more than one user account, you need to do this for each user account

Why not download IE7Pro as it claims to block "all forms of advertising, including Flash ads, rich media, fly-ins, slide-ins, pop-ups, pop-unders, spyware and adware ads, and messenger ads."

I'm trying to figure out something.

I was to start making my own ads block list, sometime ago, and I even advertised it here, but I gave up, simply because certain things wouldn't work as they should.

Example, and this one is taken from an entry from the XML file in the zip file:

For what I could testify back then, IE gives no importance to the dots before or after a word or number, if this word or number is alone.

In the above example, .468x60., IE won't care for the . before and after 468x60. So, imagine there would be something like:

555555555555555555468x60LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL and a lot more stuff. Everything would be blocked.

Imagine you had something like, which also is in the XML:

Again, IE won't care for the dots. If something like this is in the source code of the website:

    Ihadmetalwithme

If this part is important for the website to be properly viewed, then IE will kill the website.

Just by blocking something like ad. or simply ad, considering IE won't care for the dots, many websites won't be displayed properly, at all.

So, how are these lists working for you guys?

Been working fine here since I added the filters about a month ago. I can't really help you with the technical side as I just post the links. I claim no credit for the original work :)
