Everytime I click the setup file, the bar gets to the end like it's about to start installing, and it says "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem"

Anyone else seen this, with Prevx or any other program?

The setup file is on my desktop, but the error message shows it as being in the temp file in a folder called "PrevxSetup$0", which seems odd.

    Hi,

This is usually caused by a corrupt installation of the Microsoft C runtime. A previous installation will probably have removed the DLL files for the C run-time, but left the folder in-place. This confuses the C run-time installer into thinking the its already installed when it isn't.

Check for a folderin C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS called:

    x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_6b128700

If this exists but is empty, it has been left behind by a bad uninstaller and should be removed.

If correct it should contain 3 files, like this:

    01/12/2006 23:54 479,232 msvcm80.dll
    01/12/2006 23:54 548,864 msvcp80.dll
    01/12/2006 23:54 626,688 msvcr80.dll
    3 File(s) 1,654,784 bytes

If you have that empty folder, try deleting it and running the Prevx 2.0 installer again.

Excellent! I do have that folder and it was empty. I have another folder right below it entitled:

    x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.163_x-ww_681e29fb

That folder has the 3 files you listed. Is that folder above a correct location for the 3 files you listed?

Thanks, I really appreciate it ghiser1. :thumb:

    Hi,

Yes, that is a valid location. There are a number of different versions of the C run-time that Microsoft have released. I have four of them on my laptop:

    x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.163_x-ww_681e29fb
    x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_0de06acd
    x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_x-ww_6b128700
    x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.91_x-ww_0de56c07

Different versions are required by different applications so it's quite likely that you'll have more than one folder containing these files - only remove the folders if they are empty.

For more info on the WinSxS folder, what it does and why you may have different versions present, google for "DLL Hell" and "Side by Side Assemblies" and look at places like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DLL_hell
