Thanks. The spreadsheet format (.xls) makes it easy to get access to all these Search Engines and it shows 100 rows in excel, which means that the counting is correct. Amazing.

Google is missing, I thought it was also a Search Engine, maybe not popular enough to be mentioned.
The spreadsheet is alphabetical, which is a relief.

 

Alternative Search engines meant those who weren't google

Scroogle still remains the top on my list though.

AFAIK Google is the market leader for search engines. It has maintained a dominance in that sector since it overtook yahoo and microsoft some time ago. As alphalutra emphasized, the list is for alternative search engines, as in not the primary, standard, mainstream, market-leading search engine(s).

 

How is Scroogle alternative, when it's based on Google?
Isn't is just another front end?

Yes, but it gives you the power and thouroughness of google with out the privacy issues and any ads. So, that seems close enough to alternative in my book

Nevertheless, my list counts now 101 Dalmatians Search Engines, in case I forgot that Google is the market leader for search engines.

 

I thought that everything except Live Search would be considered "alternate", since LS is the one they try to pawn off on you by default in IE... regardless of who the market leader is.

My god, do we REALLY need that many search engines? I mean choices are good don't get me wrong, but there's a fine line to walk and 101 seems to cross over that line.

 

Does anyone know how to make Scroogle a default search engine in IE7? For some reason it won't allow me to do it as "test" is not in the search url

 

Yes we need multi-layered search engines, just like in security. (just kidding).

 

It's not about need, they didn't make an arrangement to offer all this. They're competing, that's all.
