One last thing to fix after my epic crash. I just noticed that Windows Update believes that my Windows XP Home system is Windows 98. My last update before the crash was "Security Update for Windows XP (KB840374)". The system was a 98 system ages ago and I updated to XP Home as soon as it came out.

After the crash, I reinstalled all of the drivers, DirectX 9, and Service Pack 1a. Everything runs smooth, with no errors in the event logs. But this Windows Update thing has me puzzled. Any ideas?

It is possible that you may have to use your xp install disc and do a repair to get it to recognize that you have xp as an os.

If I can just find the CD! I put it in a safe place with the license years ago! I moved, and now I cannot find it. I used a back up disk to fix it with the console. I just need to find my license number.

Funny thing is, I have access to Pro versions at work. But I am no pirate, just a drunken sailor.

Know what you mean. I hope you find your disc. ;) If you have Belarc Advisor you should be able to see your xp reg numbers on the BA screen.

I just fixed this problem with a new version of Windows Update. Version 5 is a beta, but it recognized my system as XP and installed all of the XP security updates. There is also a beta of SP2 there, but I did not touch it.

One last thought on this subject. I just looked at my Windows Update installation history. I have installed 221 updates since August 12, 2001! That's an average of 6.5 updates per month!!!!
