Glad to see you're sticking with an old desktop background - that was always one of my favourites.

From me Linux diary: a long-term usage review and report 2 of the Slimbook Executive laptop, with Kubuntu 22.04 LTS as the operating system, covering hardware, ergonomics, battery life, case temperatures, some software problems like freezes after quick suspend-wake, MTP in Dolphin, Skype & keyring, VLC crash on seek after update, TrueCrypt UI crash on mount, and muted notification sounds in the Edge browser, day-to-day usage, overall impression, and more. I had similar VLC media player crashes.
I posted in the VLC 3.0 thread, November 12, 2023.
What I did, was switch Hardware-accelerated decoding 'Automatic' to 'VA-API video decoder via DRM'. This resolved the issue for both my Kubuntu systems.
I don't know if one of the two chosen resolutions is better, changing the video output, or changing hardware-accelerated decoding.

Slimbook Executive, long-term usage report 3

What it's like to use a Linux-powered laptop for everyday things - beyond the nerdy dev stuff? To wit, we have a long-term usage review and report 3 of the Slimbook Executive laptop, with Kubuntu 22.04 LTS as the operating system, covering general usability, update problems with VirtualBox due to missing gcc-12 package, excellent software compatibility with WINE and DOSBox, good ergonomics, keyboard, battery life, some spurious errors, and more. Have fun.

My advice? Stay on 5.27.9 LTS until the bugs get worked out for Plasma 6.

The next thing in Linux is the upcoming PopOS COSMIC Desktop, which all the nerds are swooning over. An alpha is supposed to be released this spring.

Slimbook Executive, long-term usage report 5

Goodness abides. To some extent. Here's a long-term no-longer-perfect usage review and report 5 of the Slimbook Executive laptop, with Kubuntu 22.04 LTS as the operating system, covering ergonomics, everyday usage, and various problems and annoyances like the Super key that suddenly and randomly stops working, inconsistent screen dimming on long media playback, printer functionality issues, intermittent Samba connectivity, inability to browse Android phone directories via MTP on first connection in Dolphin, some other observations, and more. I don't like where this is going.

Slimbook Executive, long-term usage report 6

The Uncertainty Principle. Here's the sixth long-term usage review and report of my Slimbook Executive laptop, with Kubuntu 22.04 LTS as the operating system, covering new keyboard-related problems due to kernel and firmware issues after an update, resolution via kernel module blacklisting, everyday stuff, ergonomics, general user experience, some other observations, and more. Hm.

Slimbook Executive, long-term usage report 7

Upside down, Tux you turn me, inside out, code and code. Here's the long-term usage review and report no.7 of my Slimbook Executive laptop, with Kubuntu 22.04 LTS as the operating system, covering severe power management problems due to broken kernel and firmware updates - no screen dimming, no wallpaper rotation, and mouse pointer reset, log spamming due to disabled IPv6 connectivity, various bugs and issues, subsequent set of updates that partially resolves power management woes, everyday usage, overall confidence in the platform, other observations, and more. Have fun, sort of.

Thanks @Mrkvonic for your honest reports on the trials and tribulations as well as any good aspects. I enjoy your style and even though I'm no expert on any of these matters I still feel that there is a human writing from the heart. Thanks for that.
I have noticed for years and complained that developers seem to want to update for updates sake and so often (as you say) they ruin the working basics in the process. I like basic utilitarian software and hardware and hate gimmick..
In Linux Mint we are subjected to these massive Flatpack updates which are a nuisance and time consuming if you have many pcs and laptops to update..
The nerds and egotists have always been a problem in Linux and it took me years as an ordinary user with ordinary operating system requirements of trying to get it to work properly without snide remarks from cocky conceited elitist nerds when I asked for help.
I get to the point in Mint as you mentioned when I feel almost scared to look if there are updates. I don't even know what most of them are.
This has made me uncomfortable with myself as you mentioned for not knowing when to stop.
I now primarily, even though I have Mint on multiple machines, W 7 w10 and others, use a Linux dvd live operating system for everyday use, security, privacy and convenience without having to worry all the time about updates. I also feel content running from a dvd....even more than a usb stick.
I've always used XP sp3 and preconfigured Firefox older version modified with adblockers etc in Shadow Defender and Sandbox when visiting Wilders and most basic sites that don't aggressively make themselves impossible to read with olders systems.

    best wishes sdmod

    @fblais

Sorry for delay in replying, I don't always login when viewing. I just noticed your post notification today.

I'm new and unfamiliar with Linux operations and didn't know it was an option not to have Flatpack updates. I presumed that the Flatpack updates were part of normal updates. I may have inadvertently installed something that needed it.
I would prefer to not have the large Flatpack updates, which I find time consuming and a nuisance to update on multiple computers some of which are not online at the same the time.

If you don't use Flatpaks from the beginning, then you won't get Flatpaks updates.
