The programs you run sandboxed must interact with the real system. The interaction has to be fluent, otherwise, most programs wouldn't work well under Sandboxie.

To achieve (what I call) a seamless or fluent interaction, Sandboxie allows programs that run under SBIE to have Read only access to files/the File system. Real Files can be read but not modified......and when a program that runs sandboxed wants to modify a file or create a change (like when you download something), SBIE makes a copy of the file or folder that the sandboxed program wants to modify and places it inside the sandbox folder. Sandboxie tricks the sandboxed program into believing the copy is the real file/folder and thus the change takes place (inside the Sandbox folder and not in the real File system).

The windows kernel offers a callback for drivers which want to be notified when a process, any process is being created, sandboxie's driver uses this callback to inspect the early process creation stage and decide if the process should run sandboxed or not, based on the programs location and command line
