Singapore to roll out commercial 5G services by 2020

Singapore plans to roll out commercial 5G services starting next year and intends to have at least 50% of the city-state covered with a standalone network by the end of 2022.
The telecommunication regulator on Thursday called for 5G proposals from Singapore’s four local telcos.
5G refers to the fifth generation of high-speed mobile internet that aims to provide faster data speeds and more bandwidth to carry growing levels of web traffic.

Late to the party O2 has finally flipped the switch on its 5G network.

O2, the last of the four major UK operators to turn on its ultrafast mobile broadband network, announced on Wednesday that it's 5G services are now available in "key hubs" of Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, London and, er, Slough.
The operator has confirmed that the network - which is being rolled out in partnership with Ericsson and Nokia, rather than Huawei - will be available in over 20 locations, including Coventry Derby, Leicester, Stoke and Windsor, by the end of 2019 with 30 more to follow by next summer.

"We're launching with a range of tariffs that make it easy and fair for customers to access 5G, with flexible plans that cost no more than 4G. We're also switching on 5G in important parts of towns and cities first, places where it will benefit customers and businesses most. I believe 5G is going to revolutionise the way people and businesses use mobile connectivity, unlocking huge possibilities for our economy and society.

Verizon has set its 5G network live in basketball and hockey arenas across the nation, the carrier announced Friday. The high-speed network is now available in Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Chase Center in San Francisco and Pepsi Center Denver, and will be live soon in Madison Square Garden in New York City.

"Having this next-generation technology in large venues like arenas should not only enhance the game-day experience for sports fans, but provide greater bandwidth for concert-goers, visitors or businesses working inside the venue," said Heidi Hemmer, VP of Technology at Verizon.
The launch follows Verizon setting 5G live at 13 football stadiums last month in time for the beginning of the 2019-20 NFL season.

Verizon on Friday announced that its 5G network is now available in three NBA arenas and is coming to seven more by the end of the 2019-2020 basketball season.
But there's a big caveat, just like there is with Verizon's 5G coverage in NFL stadiums: Verizon 5G only covers some of the seating areas.

This isn't surprising, given that Verizon's early 5G rollout relies heavily on millimeter-wave signals that don't travel far and are easily blocked by walls and other obstacles. But while NFL stadiums typically seat between 60,000 and 80,000 people, the seating capacity in NBA arenas is generally 17,000 to 21,000. Despite the big difference in size, Verizon's 5G network isn't yet capable of covering all the seating areas in any one of these facilities.
It's not clear when or if Verizon 5G will be able to cover all the seating areas in any single major sports facility.

It’s a truism of technology: Even before new systems are operational, attackers are scoping out vulnerabilities.
Commercial 5G mobile networks are only just becoming available, with highly developed use cases for improving autonomous automobiles navigation and smart-sensor networks, and new vulnerabilities and security requirements are already emerging.

Speaking on “New Vulnerabilities in 5G Networks” at the recent Black Hat USA conference, Shaik discussed multiple ways in which 5G networks could be compromised.
In his tests, Shaik reported that 22 out of 32 tested LTE networks worldwide were vulnerable to these types of attacks, with most of the tampering persisting for an average of seven days. He reported his findings to standards organizations and hopes to see fixes implemented by vendors next year.

“This is a problem, a fundamental issue that was ported from 4G,” Shaik said. “But in 5G, there are more use cases and more capabilities that define exactly what kind of device it is, making targeting that much easier.”

According to the telecommunications giant, this makes E-Prep Cliffs the first middle school in the country to be powered by 5G.

Educators at E-Prep Cliffs will now be able to use 5G technologies to change the way they teach and engage students, and they will have access to new learning applications such as those that include augmented and virtual reality.
By 2021, Verizon aims to bring 5G to 100 Title I middle schools across the United States and has committed $400 million to education innovation.

Verizon is turning on its 5G service in Dallas and Omaha. The wireless carrier on Friday said it was expanding to the two new cities, bringing its 5G network count to 15.

"Customers in Dallas and Omaha become the latest to experience the super-fast download speeds delivered by our 5G Ultra Wideband service," said Kyle Malady, Verizon's chief technology officer, in a release. "We're focused on building 5G right in order to enable unique experiences for our customers."
The new cities give Verizon's 5G network some distance over Sprint's nine 5G cities and T-Mobile's six. AT&T is still in the "lead" at 21 total cities, but unlike the other three carriers, it doesn't let consumers onto its network.

Verizon says it plans to have 5G in over 30 cities by the end of 2019.

A national multi-carrier rollout that was planned for October 1 shifted to November 1, and the top three carriers reportedly preregistered 10 million 5G customers before revealing service prices. Now one of the carriers appears to have leaked pricing plans, and they’re surprisingly aggressive, signaling China’s interest in establishing itself as a huge market for 5G hardware and services.

Pricing for 5G data plans has been a major point of discussion over the past year as carriers across the globe have wrestled with encouraging early adoption and use of new high-speed network assets while paying for significant infrastructure investments.

IHS Markit’s RootMetrics took to the city to conduct 8,883 tests on EE’s and Vodafone’s new 5G networks between August 30, 2019 – September 21, 2019. (Three plans to introduce 5G in Birmingham this year; O2 plans to do so in 2020).
The findings on availability were stark: EE had a 51.6 availability rate, to Vodafone’s 10.8 percent, with the BT subsidiary also beating Vodafone on speed.

With infrastructure very much in the early stages of being rolled out, the company said it expects both speeds and availability to improve notably.

Nokia has recruited 350 staff in Finland this year, 240 in its mobile networks unit and many dedicated to developing SoC (system on chip) integrated circuits - a key element for its 5G equipment, a Nokia spokeswoman said via email.

“It is true that we have hired 5G development personnel lately, not only in Oulu but also in Tampere and Espoo,” the head of Nokia’s networks unit Tommi Uitto was quoted saying in Finland’s largest daily Helsingin Sanomat.

As of today, actual 5G service appears to be available across many of China’s major cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, and Shenzhen, though there are differences between the carriers. Press reports suggested that China Unicom was commencing 5G service in 14 cities, but the carrier itself insinuates that it’s covering at least 50, with peak initial data rates of 300Mbps.

Spark joined Vodafone in claiming 5G bragging rights on Saturday, but Huawei is probably the biggest symbolic beneficiary of the New Zealand telco's first live 5G network.

Spark announced over the weekend that it was trialing a private 5G service, isolated from the rest of its network, on the water for the Emirates Team New Zealand America's Cup yachting team to help defend the next America’s Cup.
The service covers parts of Auckland Harbour, and waters off Milford and Takapuna, where Emirates Team New Zealand do some of their test sailing.

The reduced latency and higher bandwidth of 5G mean Emirates Team New Zealand can livestream data and video back to engineers and designers at the base straight off the new AC75 boat, Te Aihe.
"It’s an international showcase opportunity for many of the advances that will be enabled by 5G," she said.

Australian telco Optus has launched a 5G fixed wireless broadband service for up to 138,000 homes, following a commercial trial involving over 200 residential customers.

The service will be available at 290 sites in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and other key locations in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland. Another 1,200 sites are being planned by March 2020, Optus said in a statement today.

“While it’s early days, our initial 5G service has been wowing customers who are experiencing a current average speed at peak time of 164Mbps, with the top speed achieved over 5G of 400Mbps at this point in time,” he added.
In addition, Optus plans to offer 5G mobile services through a range of 5G compatible smartphones, such as Samsung Galaxy Note 10, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and the Oppo Reno 5G.
The telco said it is also working closely with video content partners, such as 7plus, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Fetch and Stan, to ensure their 2020 4K content is optimised for its 5G network.

Gizmodo: Optus Launches 5G, Still Can't Guarantee It Will Work Indoors

Today Optus became the second telco is Australia to launch 5G.
But it still can't guarantee that 5G will work indoors.

The network is still unlikely to work indoors, though you might get lucky depending on where you live.
And we can probably expect this level of coverage indoors until Optus' in-building antennas, which are older, are upgraded to support 5G. This won't start happening until mid-2020.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) on Wednesday urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to take action to secure the United States' fifth-generation wireless networks, or 5G, against cyber threats.

“The FCC must stop leaving the cybersecurity of American consumers, businesses and government agencies to wireless carriers, and finally secure America’s next-generation 5G networks against interception and hacking by criminals and foreign spies,” Wyden wrote.
The senator also argued that the FCC should ensure that these wireless carriers build in cybersecurity protections as they roll out 5G networks.
“The FCC must act to ensure that encryption and authentication features included in 5G standards are enabled by AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile as they upgrade their networks,” Wyden wrote.

During a livestream today, T-Mobile announced December 6, 2019 as the official launch date for its national 5G service, which will rely on low-frequency 600MHz radio signals and new 5G devices to bring higher-speed service to 200 million customers on day one. Thanks to the initiative, which has been in the buildout process for a year, the carrier expects to have a basic blanket of 5G coverage in 5,000 cities and towns by the end of 2019.

The system will dynamically share spectrum between 4G and 5G carriers based on traffic demand. The switch between carriers is claimed to happen within milliseconds, minimising spectrum wastage and enhancing end-user performance

The dynamic spectrum-sharing (DSS) data call on commercial platforms in the Swisscom labs is the first act in a large-scale 5G roll-out across Switzerland, and is a part of the telco’s ambition to be a 5G leader in Europe.
