"This is not the year of 5G," says Bob O'Donnell, the president of TECHnalysis Research. "Not yet."
There are a handful of phones currently out that connect to the existing 5G networks, led by the $1,100 Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, but notably, nothing from the best-selling consumer device, the iPhone. Apple's next iPhone, to be released in September, isn't expected to work with 5G. That's not coming until 2020, say analysts.

For consumers, 5G won't be worth paying attention to until "the end of 2020," says O'Donnell, "which means that Apple will time things just right."
On top of that, the carriers have different methods of how they bring 5G to us. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile are using high-frequency waves, which offer faster service but work best when you're closest to the cell tower. Plus, they can get interference from outside elements, ranging from trees to windows in a building.

In other words, 5G is here now, if you're willing to pay for it, with Sprint. Or you could wait for 2020, higher speeds and better coverage.

Verizon brings 5G coverage to 13 stadiums as NFL season begins

At launch, Verizon says fans will mostly be able to take advantage of its 5G network while in the seating area of each stadium. A lot of that has to do with the nature of mmWave spectrum Verizon is using. Unlike LTE and Sub-6GHz, mmWave often can't penetrate hard surfaces like concrete.

But its days dealing in devices that rarely exceed $500 are about to come to an end. Motorola says it's ready to embrace premium phones again, with price tags to prove it.

The brand will launch a 5G, premium flagship phone, said Francoise LaFlamme, who leads Motorola's global marketing strategy.
And 5G doesn't come cheap.

"If you put out a $399 5G phone, you're going to have to sacrifice a lot of the elements that people value," LaFlamme said.
It's likely that a premium 5G Motorola phone would start in the $800 range, if not higher.

If you’ve been holding off on buying a 5G device because you’re concerned about cellular power drain, don’t fret: 5G devices are actually capable of delivering greater energy efficiency than 4G LTE models, according to a new study by the Signals Research Group (SRG), though either 5G or 4G may consume less power depending on the bitrates and applications being used at a given moment.

The results were mixed but generally positive for 5G devices. At maximum possible bitrates, which on Verizon’s millimeter wave 5G network can be in the 1Gbps range, 5G could be “meaningfully more energy efficient than LTE.” That continued to be true for “relatively modest 5G” speeds compared with much faster LTE than is generally found in the U.S.
In other words, early 5G chips are able to blast huge amounts of data (say, one large file) with much greater power efficiency than typical 4G, but suffer when they’re forced to dribble data (say, typical web pages with tons of small files) out at 4G-like speeds.

The 5G Application Accelerator project is part of WM5G’s ongoing push to accelerate the roll-out of 5G across the West Midlands, and will focus on the potential business applications of the next-generation network technology.
The accelerator officially starts in early 2020, and came about after the West Midlands Combined Authority won a bid in September 2018 to run local 5G pilots as part of the government’s Test Beds and Trials Programme.

Speaking at the demo event, which was held in partnership with Birmingham City University and telecommunications giant Ericsson, WM5G chair Igor Leprince said: “The overall plan is to test and launch a certain number of use cases in each of the verticals we’ve defined, and then scale these selected use cases.
“We really believe that if you don’t have the basics right, it’s going to be very difficult for operators to roll out 5G and deploy these use cases,” Leprince told Computer Weekly.

That might not be saying much, given how limited Verizon's early 5G deployments are. But it would mean that at least some people in each 5G mobile market would be able to buy the 5G fixed Internet service, which offers an alternative to wired Internet.

Verizon brought 5G Home to parts of four cities—Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Sacramento—late last year, charging $70 a month for service with no data caps and typical download speeds of 300Mbps.

The two used purely 5G systems, from handsets, radio stations, to cores, for the test.
Connection speeds doubled and data processing speeds tripled compared to the currently commercialised 5G non-standalone (NSA) networks which use both LTE and 5G networks, SK Telecom said.
SK Telecom said it expects 5G SA to be commercialised within the first half of next year.

The news brings Verizon's 5G city count to 11, the network said Thursday. That's ahead of T-Mobile's six cities and Sprint's nine, but still trails AT&T, which is up in 21 cities for its "5G Plus" millimeter wave network (though AT&T has still not allowed regular consumers onto this network).
With Thursday's announcement, all four major carriers will now be in New York, putting the city in an exclusive group with Dallas and Atlanta as an area that has 5G available from all four providers.

T-Mobile has been known for launching ad campaigns in direct and blatant opposition of its competitors. The latest campaign is called “VerHIDEzon” which refers to Verizon’s lack of a 5G coverage map. T-Mobile claims that Verizon charges more for 5G service, yet doesn’t offer any way for customers to see exactly where they can expect service, particularly, a coverage map.
We do agree it would be nice to have a more detailed map with coverage strength. This could help anticipate whether 5G coverage could potentially be available indoors or only outside.

T-Mobile also took the opportunity to mention its plans to diversify its 5G network with high-band (mmWave), mid-band, and low-band spectrum – which would be possible should the controversial merger be approved by US regulators. T-Mobile also mentions it doesn’t plan to charge its customers more for access to its 5G network.

Shortly after smaller rival Softbank said it is accelerating its Japanese 5G network deployment by two years, targeting 60% population coverage by 2023, top carrier NTT Docomo confirmed that it’s also pushing up its 5G rollout plans.
It now plans to have 5G base stations in all 47 Japanese prefectures by the end of June 2020, hitting 10,000 total base stations by spring 2021, and will begin offering limited public 5G tests in several cities on September 20.

“We are marking Friday as the day we begin our full-fledged 5G services,” said NTT Docomo president Kazuhiro Yoshizawa (via Japan Times), though calling its initial offering “full-fledged” is more than a stretch. Commercial 5G service for paying customers is still expected to commence in spring 2020, just ahead of July’s Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.
