AVG 2013/2014 - Disable the Advertising Tiles and Panel

Trying to get secondary revenue streams has been around for years. It is what we call crapware on our new PC's. The Sourceforge installer now offers variousl tool bars and other nonsense unless the user does a custom installation. Adobe flash bundles McAfee and Google products. Adobe Photohop CC has a up sell link for a watermarking plug in. VMware installs some crap. My photo blog at wordpress.com, ronscubadiver, has buttons all over the administrative pages to sell me the "Pro" version and I pay $30 per year to keep the pages ad free. I get a lot of traffic, so otherwise I would be deluged in ads.

These practices are widespread and will be universal soon.

 

Doug, I just downloaded AVG Free after having problems with another AV program. Just wanted to say thanks very much for posting this tip, it is one of the reasons I chose AVG for my new AV. It is very good to not see all the ads.

When I used to use AVG, apart from disabling the ads I also add the process avgmfapx.exe to task scheduler for getting updates every 3-4 hours(AVG free updates only once per day). My tip for those who don't know about this

 

I'm a paid User of AVG Anti-Virus (Pro). The last time I noticed any advertising was in late January 2013 - and I let them know that I was extremely peeved. Their support team, to their credit, simply apologised and ensured that all feedback would be received by their marketing dept. The AVG Tech support team, who I rate highly, would have received all the flack because of a silly commercial decision made by Marketing. According to my experience, there has been no more advertising since then, so its almost 12 months with no advertising. So far, so good and I hope it stays this way.
