I have that set up as manual, but SAS Free doesn't start it at all. Why is that so? Will version 5 start it when necessary?

 

It's designed to be LEFT RUNNING. If you modify software, it won't work as intended

 

I just think manual is better for on-demand only though. If it's so essential, why doesn't SAS at least check its status?

 

Only technical users touch services or software configuration - so it hasn't been a priority nor really needed.

 

But, wouldn't it be a better approach to set the service to Manual start? Regarding the free version, it doesn't make any sense to have the service set to Automatic, IMHO.

 

Malware can touch services as well.

I hope SAS/support.com figures out how to update the program without requiring a reboot.

 

Sometimes reboots are required when drivers are updated - for the most part rebooting won't be necessary.

 

With todays' update I have lost the context menu > right click option for scanning a file.
