No offense?! Yes, really!!

'Just happened to me yesterday...'got flamed (?) in the process of attempting to help a user with a problem on another board. 'Bothered me quite a bit - still does.
"Learn somethin' new every day...". Mine consists of being more "politically correct" (ugh), and more "sensitive" (my better-half will testify to that).
But thanks for this topic - 'learned I'm not the only one who commits the "faus pas", even if sometimes I can't figure out what is was!

Along with the language and cultural barriers, I think there is another problem that adds to misunderstanding. In todays world a lot of people are just looking for someone to do something they consider "offensive" just so they can sue. Besides that, a lot of people seem to consider themselves experts in assuming they know what someone elses intent was as to what they really meant. I don't know how anyone can get inside someone elses head, especially if they have never met that person. Can't we all try just a little bit harder to "Mind our own business", before assuming things about someone else? Besides, you know what they say about the word assume.

I know through personal experience. Misunderstanding somebodys intent or meaning could almost be considered natural for all Human beings. (It all started with the Tower of Babel). Before that, all Humans spoke the same language. There have been many times that others have made assumptions about the meaning of something I have said, that compared to what was actually said, had a totally different meaning. Sometimes their assumption was completely the opposite of what I said or meant. We did something when I was in school, where the teacher would have us all sit in a circle. She would whisper a story in the 1st persons ear. That person would tell the next person the story, and so on until it got to the last person. The last person in the circle would then tell the story to the teacher. 10 out of 10 times, the story would be so twisted at the end, there was no similarity to the original story. Every person put their own life experiences and assumptions into the original story, either adding or subtracting something, which is only natural because we're all different.
I am not assuming that everyone is looking for someone else to offend them in some manner so they can sue, but it happens everyday. A lot of things that in the past would have been blown off, are now reasons to sue, or worse. There was an incident in Chicago I believe where a deaf person got on a bus and signed something to his friend who had taken him to the bus station. Two gangbangers saw him signing to his friend and assumed he was using "gang" signs, and killed him. Beware the power of assumption. An innocent person killed because of a wrong assumption. What business was it of the gangbangers anyway what the deaf guy was doing? He wasn't threatening them in any way. He wasn't even looking at them. Sounds like it was none of their business.

4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's
3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group
13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too"
5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy
4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"

I came here to look for answers to pc troubles and got answers that helped so thanks to all and if I OFFEND anyone the intent was not there .............but when your up to your ... in alagators sometime its hard to remember that your plan was to drain the pool!!

I have to agree that this is a wonderful thread. We need to keep in mind the points that have been made in this thread. We are all different, with one strike against us already. We are miles away from each other meeting in a common area on the Internet. We can't see each others facial expressions or the emotions that others are feeling at the time of the post. We are from different backgrounds and cultures, different ages ect. Everything that is posted is best taken with a grain of discernment. Giving the other person the benefit of the doubt.

 

No one would mistake you of being a lurker with your curent rate of posting.

You can probably get away with posting immediately here, but other forums (in particular some usenet forums) will eat newbies alive if they don't read the FAQ first.

 

Being new to all this, I seem to enjoy reading this thread best. As I was trying to figure out what a lurker was. I realize that since my job takes me away from home for extended periods of time, 2-3 months to be exact, and as I'm certain I will be back here to continue my learning / visiting / building new friendships...
Y'all get the picture, I hope I figure out what needs to be done so you don't think I've been "lurking" for two months. I do think that as I read some threads that many of the Q's actually come from last years stuff. How can I deal with that?
