Well, this update really isn't for me... I restored from a three week backup and the update failed to install again. The main problem is that this update causes a dead loop, i.e. when the installation reaches 91% or 96%, the PC freezes and a hard reboot is the only way to go but it triggers the installation of the update again ending with a freeze at 96%. So the only way to get the PC working was to disable and postpone MS updates. I hope the next month's patches go through successfully.

In the meantime anyone have any advice?

SFC and DIMS have returned no problems.

EDIT: I wonder if my problem is somehow related to the below issue.

Often when I encounter a similar issue it is a device and/or driver that conflicts. If you have anything USB plugged in that can be disconnected you could try to unplug it. I once had an update that would fail and loop until I removed the Wi-Fi adapter. I'll assume it is freezing and not creating any kind of dump file?

Thx! Sounds interestingly but I don't recall of any driver updates for past months. Anyway I will remove my laptop from dock when trying this update next time. For installation including reboot (after download) internet connection isn't required, right?
    Yes.

After installing the preview KB 5028244 I had no internet access after the requested reboot. Win 10 Pro.

So I did a restart again from the power button and it was okay after that.

May have just been a one off on this machine (although I haven't had that issue before)

Thanks for the info. After having had a nightmare with KB5028166 and I'm not alone as seen on the official MS forum where similar reports are filling up I would rather continue with MS updates disabled until the next month patches unless anyone of plagued by the bug confirms that KB5028244 has brought a fix.

I've updated multiple PCs and haven't seen this issue so you probably just got lucky. Or whatever word you want to describe it with.

any reason for you to install a not needed optional preview?
someone put the gun at your head?

edit: updating on shutdown and on reboot - once!
after that 4 updates for net framework

seems not. i cannot confirm your experience.
restarts are depending on many settings - settings (in special fastboot), drivers, software, additional crappy security software. this update had a shutdown sequence and a startup sequence, thats it here. no fastboot due multiboot, no additional crappy security software.

I have installed optional previews for as long as they have existed. Never had any problems.
    Why mention guns?
I have the same settings and software as I have had all this year at least.
    I never use Fastboot.

As I said, it could have been a software race condition or anything really... just one of those things that happen, another restart settled things down as a restart often does.

Nothing to do with being politically correct. I live in UK and the saying is not common here:)
