    RIP Macintosh: 1984–2018
You may still love your Mac, but Apple doesn’t share your passion.

Why the Mac you know has no future
Apple's Mac is about to head toward an assisted living community in the desert -- and then its final resting place in the cloud.

Personally, I would never own a Mac. In my opinion macOS/OS X, is one of the worst operating systems ever released. As well as that, Macs often have serious design flaws.

But, having said that, I do think this is a shame, as I know there are lots of people who prefer Macs to Windows PCs and it's always good to have choice.

Please... the Mac is not going anywhere (just more naysaying Apple pundits and their click-bait). Apple still values the Mac and macOS and they precisely said as much during WWDC. However these journalists apparently did not care to hear such commentary, instead... I'm sure... considering themselves as experts in 'reading between the lines' and feeling that 'actions speak louder than words', etc. Of course, many of these kibitzers were the same ones predicting that Apple would be merging iOS and macOS (which Apple expressly denied at WWDC, as they had routinely in the past).

As far as I am aware, there was no new hardware announced at WWDC. Period. Not Mac, not iPhone, not Apple TV, not iPad, not Homepod, not headphones. Nothing. Also I don't believe this is unusual. Yes, sometimes Apple will "sneak peak" announce hardware at WWDC (as they did last year with the iMac Pro); however, as I recall, hardware announcements aren't typically a mandated thing. It is a developer conference after all.

The pundits simply know that some customers are a little unhappy that there hasn't been a Mac Pro refresh for a few years (albeit Apple did introduce the new iMac Pro last November), and that there are some that weren't ecstatic about the last MacBook Pro refresh (mixed feelings / opinions about the Touch Bar, etc). And, yes, the Mac Mini needs some refresh love as well. But no one that I know feels or believes that Apple is abandoning the Mac. That's ridiculous hyperbole.

Tons of creative professionals use Macs every day, and Apple well knows it. Professional software developers. Professional web developers. Professional photographers. Professional video editors. Professional writers. Etc. Just look at the outsized presence and representation of Macs within such industries and professions.

In my humble opinion, Apple is simply choosing to be a bit more deliberate in their hardware & software design. In the past few years they were roundly criticized for rushing too many features into their operating systems at the expense of stability, speed, and efficiency. Likewise they had also been criticized for rushing too many hardware changes to market (the prior round Mac Pro design, the MacBook Pro Touch Bar, the death of the headphone jack on iPhones, the reduction in ports on MacBooks, etc). In both software and hardware, Apple appears to have come to realize that it is better to wait until a design is fully implemented in a robust and well-executed manner, than to simply rush something to market in the hopes of grabbing the fleeting attention of these self-proclaimed journalistic experts and prognosticators.

When using macOS, it seems that very little thought has gone into the design of it, compared to Windows. Some things just seem really illogical. Here a few things I hate about macOS. Menus, are always at the top of the screen, rather than being at the top of a program's window. I don't like the dock at the bottom of the screen, as it takes up too much space. If you resize the dock and make it smaller, it also reduces in width. I would prefer it, if you could reduce the height and make it the full width of the screen. There's no Start Menu. Some programs, remain running when you click on the exit button and you need to exit them from the program's menu. While, I have no used iTunes on a Mac, for some time, I remember an issue I had with it a few years ago. When I launched iTunes, its window was not maximised. I clicked on the maximise button, but instead of maximising the window, iTunes switched to its mini player mode. It seemed that there was no way to maximise its window, other than manually dragging and resizing the window to fill the screen.

That's just a short list, which I could add to. Of course, it's a matter of personal opinion. However, one more example, which is more to do with a lack of hardware support, than the OS itself. A couple of years ago, I had a Mac with broken WiFi to fix. As an alternative to replacing the broken WiFi card, I decided to use an external USB wireless adapter. On a PC, all you have to do is plug it in and then Windows will automatically install the needed drivers. On the Mac, it was a nightmare to get working. I eventually was able to find and install the needed software to get one wireless adapter working (there was no support for a different brand of adapter, I tried). After which, I updated to a new version of OS X, after which the wireless adapter refused to work and the only way to fix it, was to reinstall the old version of OS X.

OK thanks for the info, I've worked with a Mac years ago for only 15 minutes and I hated it. But everything you mentioned sound like things that would also annoy the hell out of me, so no Mac for me.

I guess to each his own on using any computer. I used Windows all my life, the Mac only a little over 2 years. I really like the Mac over Windows. The little things like the Menu Bar / Dock and a few other things I had to get use to. When on a Mac, think Mac not Windows. But if you want Windows on a Mac it can be installed, something Windows can't do "Install Mac on Windows". Truthfully, I don't miss all the damn updates that Windows has to go through. I'm running Microsoft Office 2016 on the Mac now and will be uninstalling it very soon. A few months ago MS Office borked an update and screwed MS Office up. I had to wait another month for the next update for it to be fixed. As soon as I get all my documents switched to Pages, Keynote and Numbers, MS Office will be uninstalled. I truthfully respect your comments on the Mac, a Mac isn't for everyone.

Right on. You have to get used to a few quirks and forget about windows.

And that's the difficult part. For example, how would you know which apps are active, does the Dock always have to be visible? And do you guys know of good sites where you can download software for the Mac?

The Dock is always visible. The active apps have a black dot below them in the dock. Haven't downloaded anything not from the App Store except Avast Security Suite Free for Mac. For two reasons. 1 because I haven't had the Mac long and 2 the Avast is because I don't want to unknowingly pass along Windows malware to anyone I know. Also you can walk into any Apple Store and ask questions and get good answers. You can get lessons in store on how to use the software that comes with it if you are so inclined. I have found youtube to be a great resource.

Sounds pretty dumb. And I haven't really found a good site dedicated to Mac software, but I guess I will have to try Softpedia. The thing is, I would have to find a replacement for all of my favorite Windows apps. For example, this one: http://www.pesoft.fr/newstyle/

I learned something today. But then I never considered that because I like it visible. I made my Previous machine a Dell look like a Mac.

Well said Alec!!! Sadly, articles like "RIP Macintosh ..." can become self-fulfilling prophecies. Articles such as this one are speculative downers, at best, & a blood-relative of fake news at worst.

If you want to know something more about Apples great hardware take a look at the YouTube channel from Louis Rossmann. Or see how Linus from Linus TechTips has thermo-throttled the new $7k iMac "pro" instantly with heavy load, or in a few seconds with a lower one.
Just the utmost crap. Designed to look good and nothing else.

Thank you for the info on Louis Rossmann. I haven't looked at the videos yet, but I will during the week. Thumbing through Rossmann's videos I can see he is totally Anti-Apple. I'm sure there are Anti Windows videos out there. It should be an interesting watch.

If I get what you're implying, I agree. When I was shopping laptops at Amazon, the user reviews always had a number of very very bad comments about each & every make & model. I suppose that the 9-year old kids on the computer production lines in certain areas do their best but sometimes get tired working a 12-hour day & make mistakes.

The brutal fact is that people who get lemons write more reviews than people who get peaches. I suppose that anger is a greater motivator than satisfaction.
