Thanks anon for the Avira heads-up. It is odd though, Avira updated to version 15.0.34.17 on one Win 10 machine and the KB4056892 was available as well which installed fine. On my second Win 10 machine I can't get the Avira update nor the Window update...

Hi Osaban, in my W10, Windows updates didnt offer the update automatically or manually. I download the package from Microsoft Update Catalog. All went well. You could get it from there, and install it after taking care of Avira.

FWIW, no issue after installing KB4056892 in W10 1709 and KB4056897 in W7 32 bits. In neither case, the update was offered via Windows updates. For both computers, I downloaded the package from Microsoft Update Catalog and installed. All is good.

You can update Avira manually to the latest version .17 (via the "reinstall" option) =

Thanks, I think I'll wait until Avira updates and see if the MS update follows suit...

Okay guys, Avira has just updated on my second Win 10 machine and MS offered KB4056892 as a result. All is well now...

In her 2018.01.04 Patch Watch column for Windows Secrets, Susan Bradley offers this additional advice:

“While you are there patching your workstations, review whether you have any additional overdue firmware updates that need to be installed. This isn’t the first bug in the Intel chipset; in November, Intel posted about a series of chip bugs that the company has since fixed through firmware updates available via their advisory page. Please review whether you need firmware patches as well by downloading Intel’s testing tool.”

Wife's Win7 (32-bit) system would not restart after installing the Jan 2018 updates and she came screaming for me to rescue her system! Well, Windows was not able to automatically repair the problem so I next attempted to restore the SR point created by the update. The restore was successful, so I then thought I would try to install] the new updates - same problem!!!

So I again restored her system using System Restore and it's running fine, So far I have not been notified that my Win7 (64-bit) Jan 2018 updates are available, but when they are available you can be sure I'll take extra precautions before installing them!

You can't avoid, indefinitely... It will have it's [Microsoft] way, eventually. ;)

This is valuable advice. A short time ago, I idly scanned my non-suspect machine with that tool out of curiosity and it was vulnerable. Slapped an available firmware update on it, now it's good. I think. The point is, any machine should be scanned, right? You never know.

KB4056892 appears has to have somehow 'borked' my ThinkPad Win 10 system.

Boot is glacial, left-click start menu won't open (again), Explorer and Macrium Reflect very slow, etc.

Considering restoring image, maybe trying again.

Edit: After many restarts, it has started 'normally', so maybe I'll hold off. HMP was running at startup, but not this time, so maybe that had an effect.

I have not installed KB4056894 yet, because many people had trouble with it apparently. For all I know, only AMD machines were affected, but, although mine has an i5 CPU, I prefer waiting for more feedbacks.
Besides, Intel's tool said my pc was not vulnerable, so I don't even know whether KB4056894 is relevant in my case.

Getting regular BSODs (on second machine only) including mainly this one:

On Sun 2018/01/07 4:25:17 PM GMT your computer crashed or a problem was reported
    crash dump file: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\010718-11578-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: Unknown (0x0000000000000000)
    Bugcheck code: 0x1000007F (0x8, 0xFFFFF8008DC4DE50, 0xFFFFBB8CE59C79B1, 0x0)
    Error: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M
Bug check description: This indicates that a trap was generated by the Intel CPU and the kernel failed to catch this trap.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem. This problem might also be caused because of overheating (thermal issue).
A third party driver was identified as the probable root cause of this system error.
    Google query: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M

No problems on first machine with nearly identical security softs. Also, this is not an overheating problem.

    Any suggestions welcome.

    For some feedback,
KB4056894 was installed on three Windows 7 x64 Intel systems (E8600, T9550, P6200) with no borking.
    However, your mileage may vary.

Paul, with due respect I think you are running too many security programs (according to your signature). It would be interesting to try a pristine image of Windows to see whether the problems persist. One of the reasons I don't run anti-executables is because they have in the past blocked silently some Windows system drivers, it happened more than once with different machines and programs...

How does an anti executible block any drivers? They just block exe files

No issues with Windows 7 and Windows 10 updates. Let's see what this Tuesday brings next.
