Update in case anybody runs into this/cares: The workaround I found is to force avconfig.exe to use system scaling instead of application scaling. Right click on avconfig.exe > properties > compatibility > override scaling and set to either system or system enhanced. That old Avira configuration UI component could use a refresh in order to avoid this issue altogether.

Looking for new antivirus for friends/family, so is there still daily ads on Avira Free or have they removed them?

I am a happy Avira Pro user, but these days I would have to recommend Avast Free to my friends/family. It has been a while since I used Avira Free, so I am not familiar with their current advertising scheme.

The reason I suggest Avast to the casual computer user, is that you get fairly comprehensive security coverage by default. Plug and play.

For more advanced users, With Avira Free (or Pro) you may still need to layer other security products for full protection, which I do. Both products have been doing very well on the 3rd party AV testing sites, so you can't really go wrong with either.

There is still the In-Product-Messaging which means that you will receive a visual information in the lower right corner of the screen sometimes.

There are some ads. For anyone that wants to use Avira free and get rid of the ads download BGPKiller found here: http://bgpkiller.weebly.com/

It will kill all Avira ads in the background so you won't be bothered by them anymore! I have had it running for over a year now and it works fantastic! The little program is free of course.
