Yup. Their overall protection rate is just OK though. Which is strange, even with the Avira and Bitdefender engines on. You would think it would be much better.

I down loaded this and all my apps stopped functioning. W10 stopped functioning and 20 new apps appeared on my desktop... they didn't function. Had to do a full recovery of W10... NOT FUN.

What are you system specs?

It can make a difference with some softs of this nature? And not always what you might have expected from it as seems what you experienced unfortunately.

 

OK so they use the behavior blocker to spot ransomware? Then they are the clear choice.

 

Yes, Avast/AVG are pretty solid security solutions nowdays, especially with Hardened Mode turned on (agressive settings).

They do.But again if there is a new malware out there its still going to encrypt couple files before be detected (Assuming it got past all the other shields and cybercapture).Also rather have false positives(that got fixed anyway) than a infected system(where possibly you cant get back your data in case of petya).

I was using Bitdefender free, but had this keep happening. I moved on to Avast Free because of the issue:

I too had an issue with BD free about 3 months ago, when computer was boot up BD was not active (without a warning) i wanted to scan a file and BD was not scanning, than i found that BD was not active the whole evening....
That was the time when i switched to avast

Can't speak for you all and how your machines are used. I have used BD free and MBAM premium for years with zero problems. RansomOff and my machine just weren't meant for each other. Am glad it works for those here, but completely froze my system except for boot menu... resulting in a complete restore. Will stay with BD and MBAM premium as long as they continue to provide uninterrupted excellent protection as they have all along. Too bad, really wanted to go with RO.

 

OT. I don't hear much noise from Avast & AVG since they merged. Guess they were each others biggest foe.

 

Avast and Avira has been in the AV game for almost 25+ years and qihoo just entered recently with its AV(2012-2013) so of course I would trust them better than qihoo and I am sure you would pick avira over qihoo too.Avast and avira both have had concerns on privacy either with toolbars or data collection but one has a long term history than the other with ask toolbar.So avira is no different in this sector (rather just has a long history with adware)

Lets not talk about avira's history of years with ask toolbar which was specifically known as adware to the most.I am still suprised I recommend them to users who find avast free bulky so i don't exactly disregard avira completely and if I ever will it won't be without valid reasons.I try,use,recommend different free AV's to different people not just avira or avast every single time.So i get a feel of the product whether I like it and I get to have practical views on issues and try to contact them regarding it instead of just blindly critizing them.From what I know and have been told,you haven't used avast in years and avira seems to be your go-to product no matter what.It hasn't been this way for me.There was a time i completely stopped recommending and supporting avast even on wilders.I prefer a practical approach rather than a fanboyish one.See screenshot attached and:

Avast is blatantly promoting chrome which is a whole different ball game .avast does not own chrome nor is it affiliated to chrome in any manner whatsoever. do i need to say more? I have no problem sharing data related to threats etc with them and I think vlk explained their privacy policy in detail before (just google it).

I personally am not happy with all the garbage(atleast they arent adware) they want you to install by defaults and not cut off any protection unlike avira did from their users and atleast we can opt out of those things in case they are a annoyance or the user thinks can evade privacy.Also consider avast free now comes with avg IDP as a major plus point against ransom malware. For my Opera fix I use Vivaldi some of the time. Vivaldi is a web browser from the founders of the original Opera Web Browser in 1994.

 

Thats also a reason why i don't use Opera ... the owner Qihoo, i will stay away from that 360 stuff, i don't trust it.
