I'm looking to replace Outpost Firewall Pro 9.3 with another advanced firewall. I'm not interested in software that relies on or interfaces with the Windows Firewall. The free Comodo firewall seems to be the common recommendation. However, if you are not paying for a product, YOU ARE the product. Should Comodo be trusted ? What does Comodo have to to gain in creating a product for free ?
comodo is too intrusive for my opinion. and the latest google strike threatens comodo in its cert licensing - one reason more to deny comodo software. i removed several certs from my browsers (although they were dropped automatically i like to have it clean). if you work behind a router you dont need incoming firewall, only for outgoing connections. to get better advised you should list what was or is important for you for a firewall software? long ago i had also outpost and dropped it, i had look'n'stop, Eset, Jetico, tried "Windows Firewall Control 4" and sticked it now for years with "sphinx firewall" (pro) see below "similar threads" - go on and read some... also https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/any-dependable-3rd-party-firewalls-that-work.391539/ https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thr...-sphinx-soft-is-upcoming-now-released.373420/ https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thr...ic-firewall-with-inbound-and-outbound.372099/
You might try Eset Firewall. It has IDS, and Botnet protection. It blocked NSA EternalBlue Exploit. The average home router will not block EternalBlue.
Does Sphinx have IDS, and Botnet protection preconfigured in it's ruleset, or does the user have to configure all that for themself? I have never used it, but have been curious about it.
its just a firewall, no full blown or bloated suite. remember the title -> searching a firewall. Eset firewall is part of Eset suite (ESS), you should have written that before. at least i never cared about ids, botnet, wannacry, eternal-crap. some people write too much nonsense if they have too much time.
Never used OF before, ever. But as I am on Windows 8.1 guess I won't have much incompatibilities or any kind of issues. So I'll follow your advice. Many say it's such a great product.
Got installers for Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro 9.3.4934.708.2079. Is this the last version released?
Exporting and importing those *.config files will suffice to backup/restore ALL settings All rules or anything needed to be backed up?
The average home router blocks another system that is actively searching from detecting the system behind the router - unless port forwarding has been setup from the router to the system. In other words, a direct connection to the internet is required. Also, EternalBlue applies to a very specific networking configuration that comparatively few users configure. For the vast majority of home users, it is nothing to fret about. Slapping protection on top of protection against EternalBlue\DoublePulsar makes no sense - considering Microsoft patched it months ago and just about everybody here updates their Windows religiously, and finally most people do not use SMB server shares.
Just export/import, nothing else needed. If you import very, very old rules, expect alerts on many changed executables. Sometimes reboot might be a good idea.
