"FUD". What an ugly word. Is it justified? What's the unbiased criteria for labeling something "FUD?" Please, no wall-o-text, this is rhetorical. Thanks! Playing the "be on my side, I'm more knowledgeable" card--now that's painful to read. If you're not already quite paranoid about things in general, so what? Is this forum not to some extent entertainment as well as relevant information sharing? Caveat emptor.

    Prevalence

You know that atomic bombs exist and are operational, doesn't means that you have to live in a bunker everyday. However , if every of your neighbors have access to one, then it isn't FUD anymore ...

Pick a thread. Practically any thread.
Two-thirds of posts in it will be posts that takes completely unrelated articles, blog posts, reports or whatever, misinterpret them and throws them into the debate to cause confusion.

    You may find FUD entertaining.
But when you have seen 10.000 threads filled with it, then you start to react strongly against it.

I still get tics whenever anyone mentions the "sandboxing Chrome" thread.
Never has a thread seen so many posts removed, never has a thread seen so much FUD, never has so many knowledgeable members reacted so strongly against it.

Entertainment in this context means freeing one's mind from its moorings somewhat, not staring glassy-eyed at a TV set. Actually I find this and some other comments on this thread VERY entertaining/amusing and much of it informative without thinking there was an underlying agenda. The Chrome thread you reference has nothing to do with it. The question here was: is the term FUD applicable or is one just getting nasty because one has an ulterior motive? FUD is a loaded word--use at the risk of your own credibility. I can't stand Microsoft but my PC rocks W10 like it was born into it. Windows security is serviceable but my first line of defense is my two standalones. That's neither Microsoft-bashing nor paranoia.....is it? :cautious:

    lol! :)

    @plat1098 :
You have been in threads recently, debating with others who was reacting just as strongly against this as I am. So I'm sure you know exactly what it is that both I as well as many other members react against.

It has absolutely nothing to do with if a user uses product A or B.
And it has nothing to do with a specific vendor, since this happens to all.

It has everything to do with misuse of reports that doesn't test what they make it sound like, articles that claims systems/features works/reacts in a certain way when reality are the opposite etc. etc.
When such "information" are then thrown into debates repeatedly with the sole purpose of hoping to catch at least some readers on the wrong foot - then it's FUD.

No wonder the gloves come off, when people have seen it happen a gazillion times. :)

I really have no idea why certain people are complaining about certain threads being derailed by FUD or not. Let's recap:

This thread was about AV's and their protection rate, then certain people couldn't accept that Win Defender is crap, so they came up with lame excuses. Probably because they often promote it on this and other forums, which is very dangerous IMO. But then, it turned out that Win SmartScreen is also performing pretty badly on Win 7 and 8, which is probably still installed on millions of machines.

Lastly, a link was posted about SUA, and certain people claimed that most (or all) exploits/malware will be stopped by it, which is also false. The exploits itself aren't blocked, but the malware might be mitigated if it requires admin rights, but not all malware do. So again, I have no idea why certain people complain, it's like "the pot calling the kettle black". :argh:

Well, I myself wouldn't go so far as to label Defender "crap" but what I AM saying is whether its performance is overstated for marketing purposes. Come on, vendors are pushing the limits when it comes to marketing! There's a lot of monkey business behind the scenes and it's of paramount importance for the vendors to keep this out of the public's purview. It's a turn-off.

OK, you strive to keep a lid on FUD and keep things from verging to extremes. I respect that. If I was blatantly guilty of anything, I'd admit it. Not debating anything, I don't take guff from anyone who flat out misinterprets what I say because of an unyielding viewpoint plus some other undisclosed agenda. It's just that simple.
