Update: October 8 will be the first day that you will see cumulative Monthly Rollups on W7 and 8. The October 8th Monthly Rollup will contain both important non-security and security updates as a single KB. The bundle can not be broken open. The October Rollup will be followed by a November Rollup (and so on). Microsoft says that Rollups will become progressively larger.

The non-security W7 and W8 update bundle available only from the MS Update Catalog (not sent out by Windows Update) will not be cumulative and will be offered after October 8.

To implement Windows 10-style updates in Windows 7 is a very good improvement.

What I don´t understand is why monthly patches are still required for Windows 7, after all these years. There should be only occasional security patches.

 

October 8? Are you sure? What is your source?
October 8 will be a Saturday.
I would expect the Monthly Rollups to be offered second Tuesday, October 11.

I wish i had have added the source - that was really dumb on my part. I know it was an MS Exec Blog. It seems that major announcements get made all the time on these obscure blogs. The dates got seared in my mind and then I was off doing something else. Saturday will not be the day for sure, it has to a Tuesday. He may said that after October 8, it is Monthly Rollups only, rather than on Oct 8.

I'll try and find that blog again.

 

Disagree. I want to choose what install and what not install, and I don't want to be forced to install non-security updates that I don't need, neither to install every month useless big size update.

Yes. It would be quite impractical if not.
Tons and tons of megas moving through the Internet would be overkill.

What's with the qualifier, 'quality'?

I think someone is trying to make a point here.

 

It makes sense Microsoft is moving to a roll up system.

I'd like to see Microsoft offer it with security and stability only patches and a second version for those who prefer to live on the bleeding edge.

No problem.
I think you are using a PC right (not server)? If so, then rest assured Windows Update system will handle that for you. You don't have to setup anything manually to make use express downloads. It's a total transparent process.
Using WSUS (servers and network environment) is another story but here you can find infos on how to configure it properly.

Decision day is upon us Luddites.

I have decided to go with the Security-only bundle on my W7 systems. Not just to keep some telemetry at bay, but more so because the monthly mixed bag rollup is going to be cumulative and will have a variety of mandatory updates inside. It will have the same bork effect on W7/8 that W10 systems currently endure. Someone said a bricked system is the most secure system .

There is a downside or two in choosing the security-only bundle. MS has not fulfilled their promise to remove the requirement for Active-X from the MS Update Catalog website. The occasional 'improvement fix' will not get installed. However, the vast majority of W7/8 updates between now and 2020 will be security updates anyway.
