Roboscan 2.5

This is my new AV for clients computers over MSE. Very light, good detection, even pups.

 

It's an excellent choice, as it exceptionally light.

 

I was happliy using Roboscan until I saw this review by MalwareDoctor:

Roboscan failed zero day so bad I can't trust it any more.

At 04:41 = Scan Options:
Heuristic => With default setting, the option "Enable Heuristic detection" is disabled.

The so called "tester" left the above option disabled...........

Most AV products have cosmetic heuristics & are not effective.
Roboscan Heuristics is also cosmetic heuristics, test yourself.

The test is correct, default settings are the main/recommended settings of a product & used by most. If they are confident enough of their heuristics they should enable it by default.

I really like this program with its nice array of features, lite-ness and simplicity. A little more control over its firewall configuration is my only gripe, but I can live with that. I'm going to stay with it on my XP rig, with MBAM Pro in complement.

 

I used it some days. It is extremely light and quiet but I can't understand why it has so bad detection capabilities.
I have tested it several times vith new packets of malware, and the latest test was with 102 new malware. It left behing 88 viruses detecting only 14! I tested the same packet with Bitdefender free and it detected 96/102 leaving only 7!
So roboscan had to go

 

Yep, that's why I don't get why it is so popular. Who cares how light it is if its detection is lacking. VB shows good results, but every test by people here seems to show the opposite.

 

Yes I have use Robo for 18 monh and for 3 I have study the delta delay from Bitdefender DB that was in my second pc.
Delay is zero (rare) min and 7 days max with an average delay of 4 days

Personaly IMHO all BitDefender "son" knowing the date get an update DB that is the same of Bitdefender, so they can reach almost the same result. Pass this date DB start to diverge and % in virus catch decrease

 

Not really. With BullGuard and eScan the defs still update hourly AFAIK and any divergence is very minimal.

 

If Roboscan can do that, why would they delay any updates?

I am not currently using Roboscan due to concerns about the detection rate, but for me lightness is more important than detection rates. I will not use security software unless it is extremely light, which is why I have used Roboscan in the past. Because I find it very hard to get infected when I'm not using any realtime protection, I am not to fussed about choosing an antivirus with the best detection rates. For me, its about trying to find a light antivirus with good detection rates.

I don't see anyone at Wilders or MalwareTips reporting any infections while using Roboscan. Most on MTs that are infected were using Avast, AVG, and that probably is because those are two of the most popular AVs.

 

For those who put so much stock in throwing copious malware packets at AVs to see which has the highest detection rate here is a quote from Littlebits over at Malwaretips, which I agree with completely.

You forgot to include malware digitally signed. There is always going to be variables. That said, Littlebits' comment, in general, if adhered to with vigilance and practice, would negate the bulk of infections users catch.

 

An old XP laptop is getting donated and I fired it up to wipe and install Linux.

I forgot I had installed Roboscan in April and in the interest of pure scientific inquiry I updated. The defs/sigs lagged by fifteen versions. The "updated every day" Web site lists August 12th defs. At least the defs server leads their Webs one.



The support/manual_db.aspx page for manual def updates is still "coming soon" as it has been, as I can recollect, since Roboscan first appeared. No biggie since as of right now it's: August 12 2014 Manual Database update files, File Name : ALYacDBUpdate_20140812.exe.

Purely in the interest of just-for-grins, I downloaded RIS Free and performed an uninstall/re-install. The bdcore.dll engine, currently 11.0.1.12, is still 11.0.1.6. Not surprising in that the last time anything was done to this app was in November 2013 - a Cyberverse eternity.

Setting aside their Proactive Detection Technology and its Tetra engine (defs also listed as August 12th), in its current state and with its decent (for XP) firewall, Roboscan must be considered at best "better than nothing." And worthless against the latest zero-day exploits (within the construct of signature protection) except for the times the BD database is current as it most likely was/is for the VB100 Comparitives where RAP was on par with BD itself and their third party licensees.

With their ESTsoft division active in the Android sphere (ALYac Android), maybe ALYac will surprise us with a Roboscan update. But with the "Latest Announcement" on that Web site being April 2011, IMHO one should run, not walk, away from Roboscan. Or maybe wait on ALYac Internet Security... Coming soon.

FWIW, I emailed them a few weeks ago about localized versions, but never heard anything back.

 

Better than nothing but it would be better to install one of the other free AV.

 

Roboscan is excellent.One of three which I would propose to someone.First two are Panda cloud and Baidu

 

Fortunately, odds are that will be no one I know. Doubtless you also recommend CRT displays. And nylon bias ply tires. Windows 98.

 

Thanks for the information. It's a real shame about the slow updates, becuase I have always liked Roboscan due to it being exceptionally light and unobtrusive. For the time being, I will not install it on any of my customer's computers.

 

lol agree. i would never install this on anyones system. i once tried it out with a few people and it was a nightmare.
