For those of us that don't necessarily want our board profiles viewed or at least less than others -
how do we set our profiles to avoid being tagged in thread replies by other users ?

Why do I say this ? Tagging causes a direct link to your actual board profile which most would generally not care to see or think of viewing !

There currently is no board setting that would disallow that from happening. One thread that I will not site caused me to report the thread to a Mod in order to get the profile name tag removed.

If one calls up a user profile during a post reply and tags the user in which they are replying to - this should be a user opt-in (not) *Hey Mods*, remove the hereto unnecessary profile tag.
In other words - enable user profile tagging yes | no via Privacy Preferences.

I don't understand why this is an issue. Profiles are not secret. Tagging does not reveal anything that is confidential.

A tag on a username leads to exactly the same place as the username in the profile block on the left side of every post we make.

i.e. @LowWaterMark here in this post is exactly the same as my member name over there on this post.

<<<<<<<<<<<<< (clicking on my name above or my name to the left, is exactly the same thing)

So, can you explain what you are trying to protect or restrict exactly, that would require some kind of privacy setting?

Just use the PLAIN tag. It works, this post is your evidence. =P

Well, siljaline's talking about "other people" tagging his username. Not himself.

But, that said, I still need to understand why this is a bad thing.

At the time of this post, siljaline has 5,776 posts on the forum. Each and every one of those posts contains a direct link to that member's profile.

If, in the course of two to four weeks, a member or two 'tags' that profile in a post... how exactly do those 2-3 extra profile links, make that member more viewed than the thousands of natural links caused from the member's own posts?

I need to understand the issue before I will consider any action to change what is via XenForo a totally normal and practical feature.

I'm not going to touch the necessity aspect, but at least the PLAIN tag is brought up to people's attention so they can voluntarily use it if siljaline's request was not granted. Come to think of it, it looks like most people are still not aware of this PLAIN tag, is it possible to add it in the post editor in a form of a button, drop-down menu, etc?

I tagged him yesterday so I assume he got an "alert" notification maybe that's why he's asking. :doubt:

Before the board moved to Xenforo while Wilders was using VBulletin You would have to expressly create a BBCode link in your reply to that users profile.

Of the years I've been a member at Wilders, I can recall all of the instances that I've pointed directly at someone's profile on one hand !!

In Social Media, as with Facebook, it has tag review - this gives the user the opportunity to allow or "click off" the Tag. https://www.facebook.com/help/www/247746261926036

In the new board settings, I've expressly set my profile to be viewed only by people I follow. Therefore, when a tag to my profile is created in a post reply, I assume the user would not be able to view my profile based on the Privacy settings I've elected to use.

It does not matter how your profile is clicked upon... the settings that you select in your profile are the settings enforced. Tags are not some special way around any settings on the forum.

You have nearly 6 thousands posts, each one of which has your profile link. A handful of "tags" (also countable on one hand), will not in any way change your privacy settings. They are not in any way more revealing than your profile itself.

Tags will continue to be allowed because they don't change anything or reveal any private information. They are simply a useful forum function.

And you have no opinion on unneeded profile tagging - as you are well aware. As I've indicated already - tagging was not part and parcel of the old board software but enabled by default under the new board software.

Well, I don't know that the old forum not being able to do something is good reason to not allow new functionality now.

But frankly, I like that this feature isn't just an easy way to link to a member, but, that when it is used, it alerts the member who was tagged. I mean that's great. You get told when someone refers to you. I've been tagged a few times in threads that I wasn't actively reading. When I was tagged, I got an alert and that caused me to go read the thread. That seems like a really useful feature.

Since this is a global function, enabled or disabled for everyone, I can't see removing it for the reasons mentioned in this thread.

On the contrary, the old Forum required the user to directly create a URL (link) pointing to that persons profile.
I don't see a need to be flagged | alerted that someone has partaken in something I've been active in.
Perhaps you do, or find that feature is neat-o. It's another board invading Personally identifiable information

I could live with that in lieu of anything more privacy invasive.

How so? As I already said, there is no differences between a normal profile link and a tagged link. They lead to the same place with exactly the same privacy settings being enforced. So, I can't see how a tagged link is an invasion on PII, when it points to the same place, and doesn't grant any extra access rights to someone's profile?

    @siljaline = https://www.wilderssecurity.com/members/siljaline.4723/

The tag link goes to your profile no difference at all.

""This member limits who may view their full profile.""

And you have limited who can view your profile anyway. So nothing to worry about.

    - edited by request of tagged member to remove tagged link to profile.

And it will remain limited view - to avoid tagging.

Nor will it be removed. I've explained that a "tag" link is absolutely identical to every other link to your profile. Why you insist that the "@" linking is somehow invasive but your own profile entry on every post you've ever made isn't, I just don't understand.

The tag link function is totally benign and is a standard feature of this forum software (and others now, in their latter versions), and does not merit removal.

And for the last time, the tag "@" link does NOT allow any more access to your profile than your member name link itself everywhere it occurs. It does NOT override your privacy settings in any way.
