Startpage or Ixquick, it stills does not find anything compared to Google, especially when mistyped. Good to use for privacy browsing though. That is actually a good thing, but alternative services try to describe it as evil to promote their own services. Typical marketing.
I agree. Besides, Startpage provides the Google search results so there shouldn't be any differences. And as said above, merging it with the other search engines in ixquick should make it even better.
Yes ! Exactly that . Get all the benefits from Google's power , but give them no personal info in return ( eg. by using StartPage ) Looks like a " win/win " scenario to me ! -
I've come to like https://search.disconnect.me/ better. More Google features are exposed, "anonymously".
I don't understand your response to @Daveski17. I read the link but still "thought" (past tense) they were the same thing. Now I don't.
I'm not questioning your opinion on this, I'm actually curious as to why one wouldn't want google results? Is it strictly due to trackers and such, or are there good links that google results drowned out? How does Startpage differ from Google with Disconnect (addon) in terms of privacy? Where does Duckduckgo stand in all this? It's been my default for a while now but has it become too mainstream?

You don't need any of the Disconnect addons. I have no clue about privacy of one vs others. I just like that (at least some of the time) I can use Google "Web | Images | Videos | News | Search Tools" indirectly.
Do you mean I don't need Disconnect at all or with Startpage? I thought Disconnect was highly recommended.
I do not like, that on Startpage, you can not disable showing google maps, maybe because it is google related search? Ixquick has no problem with it.
Geographical maps - Allows Google static maps to be shown for searches while safeguarding your privacy. Can enable or disable the checkbox in StartPage settings. Save the settings by allowing anonymous 'cookie' or Generate URL that allows you to save your settings without using cookies.
I find that Disconnect gives the best results, especially for people searches. Startpage claims to use Google search but often shows fewer results. For general searches (word meanings, calculations, etc.) I find DuckDuckGo the most handy. I rarely use IXQuick, but I keep a bookmark for it anyway.
That is the problem, it does not work, even when cookies are allowed. When I click on save settings/generate URL, it is checked again.
You are correct. Startpage for some reason doesn't disable (uncheck box) Google static maps for searches when you save settings or generate URL. Probably has something to do with Google searches. Ixquick on the other hand seems to allow you to enable/disable this map setting. NOTE: https://www.ixquick.eu/ does not list Geographical maps (Google static maps) on the settings page.
Cool thanks. Doesn't the plug in do more than privatize searches? Does https://search.disconnect.me/ do anything once you click on a link?
I don't know. I want to give less to Google, is all. Beyond that, sites just see whatever VPN exit I'm using. Tor browser doesn't use Disconnect plugins either, by the way.
"startpage" is a red flag for me - often installed as start page as with adware or as adware. using here bing, ddg or google.
Not able to access ixquick searches when JavaScript is disabled in the browser. StartPage by Ixquick and StartPage will provide results without JavaScript. https://ixquick.eu/eng/ixquick-eu-no-js.html
