It's very odd for BitDefender to skip a virus, it's odd for any antivirus. Do you remember what BD where you running and what was that virus that destroyed your comp?
And about Norton; you should read some oppinions inside this forum.
Also you should consider what DVD+R said,

After all opinions have been offered, the only way to see what is best is to try it. All current AVs do well on some and not so well on others. I had poor experiences with BD, and prefer several others. However, most folks have good results with BD, and if it runs well it is a top notch AV.

If one wants to see some of the better ones trial, KAV, BD, NOD, Avira, F-Secure, Avast Home. and AVG. I have used all to some extent, and would feel safe with any one them. I currently have settled on KAV6 and F-Secure 2007. My fall back position has been Avast Home.

    Best,
    Jerry
