an email from yahoo today...also there was a list of email addresses they deleted from my address book...apparently they only verified yahoo email...I'm guessing this is part of the promo they have of where you can now request a user name that was previously unavailable but still it seems a bit intrusive

Are you telling me Yahoo is reading and editing our address books?

absolutely...they showed email addresses that they deleted....they keep getting worse and worse, now whenever I search for anything in my email folders I get an instant "relevant" ad that has something to do with my search terms

What is it with big companies forcing things on its users/customers?

What they did was the wrong way to combat the issue. They could have easily sent an email letting you know that these addresses were no longer valid and given you the option to delete your own contacts.

What if they decide you don't need your older emails and delete them?

I'd like to see a clear definition of 'no longer valid'. Large corporate entities deciding the validity of things usually indicates that they're up to something. Could it be that they're trying to distract from their dwindling user base in the wake of the NSA scandal?

I'd bet it's connected to the reissuing old emails strategy by yahoo. One big problem with that strategy is that there's a high likelihood that an old yahoo email still collects a lot of spam on a daily basis. That's not going to stop with a new owner.

A few months back I happened to check on a set of hotmail names to see if there was one I liked but they were all owned. I recently checked again and one of the names was available so I grabbed it. The first day I get 40 spam emails that looked like they were meant for the previous owner. If someone wants to use the yahoo service with a particular name, I'd suggest they try ymail or rocketmail as it's just rebranded yahoo; there are plenty of names available but no pending spam problem that comes with a recycled name.
